The mission of the New London Maritime Society?s (NLMS) Custom House Maritime Museum is to preserve New London?s U.S. Custom House and New London Harbor Light, and to promote and interpret the maritime history of the port of New London and the surrounding region through museum exhibitions and educational programs.
NLMS was formed in 1983 by a group of concerned citizens looking to save New London?s ?jewel on the waterfront??an 1833 Custom House designed by architect Robert Mills, designer of the U.S. National Washington Monument.
The building is the oldest continuously operating custom house in the country and still maintains New London?s customs office, a department of US Homeland Security.
In 2008, we celebrated the 25th anniversary of the New London Maritime Society and the 175th anniversary of the commissioning of the New London Custom House building. In 2010 we celebrated the 250th anniversary of the establishment of New London Harbor Light, the 4th oldest lighthouse in North America, and oldest light on Long Island Sound.
