Author Michael Putzel to Speak at Slater Memorial Museum Jan 23

“The Price They Paid – Enduring Wounds of War,” by Journalist Michael Putzel, shares the true story of a legendary helicopter commander in Vietnam and the flight crew that followed him into intensive helicopter warfare. It also discusses Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, (PTSD) with which many Vietnam Veterans continue to struggle even today.

Norwich Free Academy star athlete, Robert L. “Bobby” Howard, whose name appears on Norwich’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial, was killed in action at the age of 24 on June 10, 1969.  Robert was part of Troop C and a member of that crew.  Putzel’s book also contains a moving account of West Pointer, Major Bill Zierdt who wrote the "regret to inform you" letter to Robert's son, a four-year old toddler at the time, and it continues to relate the effects of this loss upon Robert Howard II in the chapter, entitled "Another Generation.”

This book contributes important information about Norwich's history, especially in this national period of Vietnam War Commemoration.  Local history demands that today’s youth know and understand the contributions of their local ancestors.  The Norwich Lions club donated copies of the book to Norwich Public, Catholic, Charter, Middle, High Schools, Technical Schools, Three Rivers Community College and Otis Library for availability in classes and the library.

Michael Putzel has been invited to travel to Norwich; arriving on Friday Jan. 22, 2016 for a Radio interview on WICH-1310AM from 1-2 pm with Stu Bryer; a special Honor and Remember Veterans Flag presentation, during half-time, at the NFA Varsity Basketball game which starts at 7 pm.

On Saturday Jan. 23, 2016 Michael will be speaking and signing copies of his book in Slater Museum at Norwich Free Academy; from 9-12 noon.  Books will be available for sale on Saturday.
Robert Howard II's employer T-Mobile has already provided a generous donation to cover Michael’s Speaking Fees and the Courtyard at Marriott in Norwich has provided his accommodations.

Robert L. Howard II is the son of NAC Secretary Roberta J. Vincent.
