Guest Speaker: Joseph Walsh, General Dynamics Electric Boat

Eastern CT  – The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT is set to present the Regional Chamber Awards and recap its activities in 2015, as well as review its projections for 2016, at its Annual Meeting on Tues. March 22, 2016, 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Hilton Mystic.

With awards sponsored by CMEEC – the CT Municipal Electric Energy Cooperative, the Chamber will honor individuals and businesses that have made significant contributions to eastern CT in the past year. Recipients include:

  • Ricky and Tai Au, Co-Owners of the new Pink Basil Restaurant in Mystic: Small Business of the Year
  • Tim Brown, Owner of the Inn at Mystic and Harbour House Restaurant: Community Revitalization Leader of the Year
  • Louis Ziegler, Executive Director of the Mohegan Tribal Housing Authority & Chair of the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT Foundation: Volunteer of the Year
Pink Basil in Mystic is the third local restaurant in eastern CT owned by Ricky and Tai Ai (others include Thai Sawasdee in Groton and the Spice Club in Niantic). The Aus employ 70 local people in their restaurants in the peak season, serving eastern CT’s residents and tourists alike. They use each of their restaurants as a learning experience to better refine how they operate their small businesses.

Tim Brown purchased and renovated the Inn at Mystic from 2013-2015, giving the beloved Mystic landmark a much-needed facelift. The rejuvenated hotel’s presence in the community, with the new Harbour House Restaurant, has helped revive interest in historic Mystic, as well as spurred increased tourism and economic development near the hotel and restaurant.

Louis Ziegler, Executive Director of the Mohegan Tribal Housing Authority, has served on the board of the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT Foundation since 1997. He has substantially expanded the Foundation’s fundraising efforts, with its 2015 Holiday Gala among the most successful in its history. Due in large part to his work, the 2015 Holiday Gala raised $115,000 to distribute to non-profits in eastern CT that assist children and families in need.

“Our entire region has benefited from these individuals’ hard work, sense of commitment, and time spent making eastern CT a better place to live and work,” said Tony Sheridan, President & CEO of the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT. “They have set a high bench mark for all of us to live up to, whether setting an example of good business management, driving local economic development, or helping secure toys and warm clothing for local children. We are proud to recognize them for their commitment to our community.”

Other highlights at the Chamber’s Annual Meeting include remarks by Joseph Walsh, Vice President for Nuclear and Modernization Programs for General Dynamics Electric Boat, as well as a report from the Chamber Foundation, the election of new Chamber board members, a look back at 2015, and projections for 2016.

Additional sponsors of the Annual Meeting include Hilton Mystic, the CT Airport Authority, CorePlus Credit Union, COVANTA, Jewett City Savings Bank, Levine Insurance Group, Nature’s Art Village, Norwich Public Utilities, and United Bank.
