Trio Win Regional Championship; Record Six Qualify for NCAA Championship

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Coast Guard, ranked 10th nationally, will send a record six wrestlers to the NCAA Championship led by a trio of Bears won captured regional titles leading the team to a second place finish for the second straight season at the NCAA Division III Northeast Wrestling Regional at Rhode Island College.

Philip Rogers (165), Paul Detwiler (184) and Jon Wagner (197) all won regional championships. AJ Aeberli (174) and Patrick Irwin (HWT) placed second while freshman Noah Caskey (141) won three matches on Sunday to place third and earn an NCAA bid.

It was the second straight regional championship for Wagner.

The NCAA Division III Championships will take place March 13-14 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Johnson & Wales won the team title with 168 points, the Bears were second with 122.5 points while NYU was third with 122 points.

Rogers beat Taylor Shay from Roger Williams 1-0 in the semifinals at 165 pounds to earn a spot in the championship match and secure a spot at the NCAA Championships.   He pinned Zack Lawrence from Springfield in 2:36 to win the championship.

Aeberli won a 10-6 decision over Brett Leonard from Roger Williams in the semifinals to guarantee his return to the NCAA Championship. He dropped a 3-2 decision to Marco Gaita from Wesleyan in the final.

Detwiler was a 10-4 winner over Josh Smith from Southern Maine in the semifinals and beat Edwin Morales from Bridgewater State 9-3 to win the championship.

Wagner earned a 3-2 decision over Jack LaCorte from NYU to earn his spot in the final. Wagner beat Tommy Wrzesien from Johnson & Wales 5-4 to win the championship.

Irwin won a 2-1 decision over Williams Ortman from NYU in the semifinals, but was pinned by Michael DiNardo from Johnson & Wales in 5:41 in the final

Caskey (141) won an 8-3 decision over Nick Wagner from Roger Williams in his first consolation match of the day before beating  Nathan Lackman from Rhode Island College 2-1 to earn his spot in the third place match against Max Tempel from Castleton, who beat Caskey 3-1 in sudden victory on Saturday where he turned the tables beating Tempel 3-1 to earn his NCAA spot.

Caden Mareno (133) was pinned in 3:29 by Chris Trelli from Springfield in his first match of the day to end his season.

Last year, Coast Guard sent five wrestlers to the NCAA championship with Aeberli earning All-America honors.
