Comcast Volunteers Make Change Happen at Harbor Elementary on 18th Comcast Cares Day

100 Volunteers in New London Joined More than 1,000 Volunteers Across Connecticut

New London, CT – On Saturday, May 4th, 100 local Comcast NBCUniversal employees and their families, friends and community partners came out to “make change happen” as they improved the Harbor Elementary School as part of the 18th annual Comcast Cares Day.

During April and May, more than 1,000 Connecticut volunteers took part in a number of initiatives that included blood drives, spring-cleaning projects, an employee-organized electronic recycling event and other volunteer efforts with nonprofit organizations that culminated on May 4th with several large-scale projects in Hartford, New Britain, New Haven, New London and Waterbury.

At Harbor Elementary School, Comcast employees, their families, friends, were joined by volunteers from the Arc of Eastern Connecticut and Riverfront Children’s Center. The hard-working crew of 100 volunteers planted flowers, trimmed weeds, mulched and cleaned up the raised garden beds.

“As we celebrate our 18th annual Comcast Cares Day, we are delighted to partner with Harbor Elementary School to give back to our local community here in New London,” said Michael Parker, Regional Senior Vice President of Comcast’s Western New England Region.  “It is incredible to see how we can drive meaningful change by bringing together our employees, their friends and families, and our community partners, both on this day and throughout the year.  We are thankful for the participants and volunteers who continue to work to make a positive difference.”

“We sincerely appreciate Comcast NBCUniversal for including Harbor School in the Comcast Cares Day. Your kindness, generosity and effort will certainly add to the beautification of the Harbor School Campus,” said Cynthia Ritchie, Superintendent of New London Schools. “It is with sincere gratitude that we thank the employees at Comcast NBCUniversal that chose to make a difference in the Harbor Community.”

Comcast Cares Day is more than just a day – it is an illustration of the spirit of volunteerism that our employees bring to life each and every day.  From using technology to create positive change, such as teaching digital literacy skills, to mentoring youth, to stocking food banks, to beautifying parks, Comcast NBCUniversal employees volunteer during this celebration and throughout the year to make a lasting impact. To date, more than 1 million Comcast Cares Day volunteers have contributed over 6 million service hours to improve local communities at more than 10,000 projects.  This year, the Company expected more than 100,000 volunteers from Comcast, NBCUniversal, and for the first time Sky, to participate in projects across the country and around the world.

The Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation will also provide grants to local partner organizations on behalf of volunteers who contribute their time on Comcast Cares Day. The grants will help Comcast’s partners continue their mission of serving the community throughout the year.  To date, the Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation has awarded nearly $25 million in grants to local nonprofit organizations who have served as partners on Comcast Cares Day.
