Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation Awards $3000 Grant to Jonnycake Center of Westerly

The Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation has awarded a $3,000 grant to the Jonnycake Center of Westerly for emergency food assistance. These critical funds will be utilized in a four-pronged approach to assist neighbors in need:

  • The Jonnycake Center of Westerly’s Monthly Food Assistance Program provides a week’s worth of food to local residents every thirty days, complementing other government programs such as SNAP. Nearly 3,000 residents of Westerly, Charlestown, Hopkinton, and Richmond, Rhode Island seek this monthly food assistance on a regular basis. Between 2018 and 2019, we distributed supplies for 214,637 meals – a 3.5% increase over the previous year, which demonstrates a rising need in the community for crucial food assistance.
  • Our Power Pack Program provides nutritious, delicious meals and supplies to local schoolchildren every weekend of the year.
  • During students’ school breaks, the SPLASH Program (Summer Program Looking to Alleviate Student Hunger) provides healthy breakfast and lunch meals to any child in need in our service area.
  • The Center’s weekly Farmers Market, made possible in the summer months thanks to a collaboration with the Charlestown Community Garden, Rhode Island Community Food Bank, the University of Rhode Island Master Gardener Program, along with local gardens and farmers, offers free fresh, locally-grown produce for Jonnycake clients and community members every Wednesday during operating season.
“The Jonnycake Center of Westerly extends our heartfelt gratitude to the Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation for their wonderful $3,000 grant,” said Lee Eastbourne, Jonnycake Center of Westerly Executive Director. “The Foundation is a highly-regarded community partner who gives generously to many non-profits and social service agencies throughout the shoreline area. Thanks to their support, we can continue to make significant inroads in the fight against hunger.”
