Eastern CT Symphony Celebrates Mozart and Lalo with a Jan 27 Birthday Bash Concert

Get ready to celebrate the birthdays of two composers both born on January 27 that provide for a wonderful night of musical contrast.

French composer Édouard Lalo’s Le Roi d’Ys Overture will begin the celebration in dramatic fashion, depicting the city of Ys which becomes engulfed by threatening waves. Relieving the intensity, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Rue Sanft, Mein Holdes Leben is a gorgeous aria, performed by the ECSO audience favorite, soprano Sarah Yanovitch. ECSO woodwind and horn principals then lead the orchestra in a more spritely work by Mozart, Sinfonia Concertante, K. 297b. After intermission, Lalo’s Rapsodie norvégienne (Norwegian Rhapsody) showcases the early Romantic style.

Two more works by Mozart bring the festivities to a close, starting with an aria from his opera Il re pastore (The Shepherd King), L’amero, saro costante. The final piece is one of Mozart’s latest string works, the rousing Sinfonia Concertante K. 364 for Violin and Viola, this time featuring the Miller-Porfiris Duo, both in-demand soloists and consummate musicians making their ECSO debut. Mingle with artists and fellow concertgoers after to enjoy cake and champagne! This concert is sponsored by Chelsea Groton Bank.

Ticket holders are invited to a pre-concert chat at 7 PM given by ECSO Music Director, Toshiyuki Shimada and guest artists Anton Miller and Rita Porfiris.  All attendees are also invited to a free post-concert reception hosted by board members Liane Crawford and Catherine Marrion. Ticket prices range from $28 to $62 with $12 tickets available for any person under 30 years of age, and active or retired military personnel. You can purchase tickets online at: www.gardearts.org or through the Eastern Connecticut Symphony office at 860-443-2876.
