1000 Books Before Kindergarten: Kick-Off Event at Mystic & Noank Library

1,000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN
SETS CHILDREN ON THE PATH TO SUCCESS . . .
ONE BOOK AT A TIME

Families are invited to join 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten. We are thrilled to be starting our own ‘1KBK’ (as it’s known) at the Mystic & Noank Library. This nationwide effort focuses on early childhood literacy. Thanks to generous funding from the Groton Education Foundation, this program is available to all families with children between the ages of birth and five years with the goal of reading one thousand books prior to the start of formal schooling.  Sound nearly impossible? It’s not! Three books a night for one year is over 1000 books!

Join us on Saturday, March 25 at 3:00 p.m. for our Kick-Off Event with a special presentation by children’s book author Tish Rabe. Tish Rabe has written over 160 children’s books for Sesame Street, Disney, Blue’s Clues, Curious George, Huff and Puff and many others. In 1996- five years after the death of Dr. Seuss- she was selected by Dr. Seuss Enterprises to create The Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library, a new line of rhyming science books for early readers. For more information visit tishrabe.com.  We have an exciting afternoon of activities planned.

Research shows that the most reliable predictor of school success is being read to during early childhood. Reading to children from an early age can help close the vocabulary gap and prepare children to enter kindergarten with the skills they need to succeed. Most importantly, sharing books with children promotes a lifelong love of books and reading.

Registration will begin Saturday, March 25th, and is ongoing.  For more information, call the library at 860-536-7721 or visit our website, mysticnoanklibrary.org. This program is free.
