Book Launch by Cormac O'Malley July 12 in New London, Talk at The Thames Club July 17

Cormac O’Malley, of Stonington, will launch his most recent book Western Ways: Remembering Mayo Through the Eyes of Helen Hooker and Ernie O’Malley at Hanafin’s Pub, 312 State Street, New London, on Tuesday, July 12, at 5:30 PM. The book is a collection of hauntingly captured photographs and associated texts that reveal the rural life of Ireland in the late 1930’s early 1940’s. Western Ways is co-edited by Cormac and Julliet Christy Barron.  This is Cormac’s first public book launch outside of New York City.

Mr. O’Malley was raised in Newport, County Mayo, Ireland.  His Father was Ernie O’Malley, an IRA Commandant General during the post 1916 wars of independence. Ernie O’Malley is also noted for his memoirs, On Another Man’s Wound, about the War of Independence, and The Singing Flame, about the Irish Civil War.  Cormac has edited a series of books about early 20th Century Irish history as well as books of his Father’s letters, 1922-1957. Cormac is a visiting scholar at New York University, a Research Associate at Trinity College, Dublin, and, is President of “American Friends of the Arts” in Ireland.  Cormac’s Mother, Helen Hooker, was an American from Greenwich, CT and a highly regarded sculptor, photographer, painter and theater stage designer.

Mr. O'Malley will speak at the John P, Holland Division, Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) sponsored lunch social at the Thames Club, State Street, New London, on July 17.  He will discuss his reflections on “A Changing Ireland, 1169-2016, and American Influences on the Irish Rising of 1916.”  He will argue that Ireland has been subject to outside influences for over 1,000 years, temporal, religious and military, and yet has retained its own identity and has now achieved its political and economic independence.  Mr. Tony Sheridan, President of the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT, was the speaker at the last AOH luncheon social.

The multi-course lunch on July 17 will be open to the public.  This event starts at 11:45 AM.  The cost, per person is $25.  Reservations must be made by July 7.  For information and tickets contact:
