Community Giving Program Continues to Positively Impact Region's Non-Profits and Students

Waterford, CT – Charter Oak Federal Credit Union had an exciting first quarter, announcing the expansion of its $70,000 scholarship program and awarding $25,000 in grants to local organizations.

Grant recipients from the first quarter include Catholic Charities of Norwich; Discreet Undergarment Banking For You; Eastern Connecticut Housing Opportunities, Inc.; Eastern Connecticut Workforce Investment Board; Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut; Healing with Horses, Inc.; The Historically Black College Alumni, Inc.; Madonna Place, Inc.; Norwich Human Services; Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center; The Last Green Valley; The Light House Voc-Ed Center; United Way of Southeastern Connecticut; Little Angels Program; and Our Piece of the Pie.

Charter Oak kept the momentum going in the second quarter, and awarded $78,000 in college scholarships in May to 39 students. “A few applicants had exceptional essays and we decided to award a few additional scholarships – exceeding the initial amount by $8,000,” said Brian A. Orenstein, Charter Oak’s President and Chief Executive Officer.

Previously, Charter Oak awarded six $2,000 scholarships annually.

Charter Oak continues to demonstrate its commitment to eastern Connecticut through its Community Giving Program. Since the inception of its Community Giving Program in 2009, Charter Oak has awarded well over $1 million to non-profits, charitable groups, and scholarship winners.
