Charter Oak to Award More Than $70,000 in Scholarships

Waterford, CT – Charter Oak Federal Credit Union formally announced the expansion of its scholarship program Thursday afternoon.

The expansion will impact more than 35 college-bound students in high schools throughout eastern Connecticut. Each student will receive one $2,000 scholarship to be used towards their fall 2015 tuition.

“We are increasing our annual investment in Connecticut’s youth by six times,” said Brian A. Orenstein, Charter Oak’s Chief Executive Officer. “This will be the largest single disbursement of scholarship funds in Charter Oak’s history.”

The scholarship expansion will reward students throughout Charter Oak’s field of membership who aspire to attend an institution of higher education. One high school senior from each high school in New London and Windham counties will be selected as a scholarship winner.

College-bound seniors who currently attend high schools with enrollment of at least 100 students, in New London or Windham counties are invited to apply. All applicants must plan on attending college this fall, be involved within the community, and be or become a member of the credit union. There is no membership cost for students at Charter Oak. For a complete list of all eligible high schools or to download an application, visit CharterOak.org/community. Charter Oak will award additional scholarships to eligible students who are currently enrolled in other high schools and colleges. All applications are due by April 1, 2015.

Scholarships will be awarded at a private reception held in Charter Oak’s Community Room at its headquarters in Waterford this May.
