Horses Healing Humans Offers Children a Unique, Unforgettable Summer Camp Experience

Stonington, CT – Horses Healing Humans, Inc is now accepting Registrations for our 2017 Summer H.E.A.L.S Camp (Humans and Equine Alternative Learning in Summer).  The inclusive, small group program is open to special needs and typically developing children of developmental ages of 6-12 who participate in Riding, Art, Theater, Play, and Nature immersion activities.  Weekly activities include daily horse care and riding skills, costume and set (arena) design, and hiking the sensory trails.  Over the course of the week-long (M-F, 9am – 2pm) day-program, groups of no more than 6 campers collaborate to produce a short one-act play with their horses, as well as a related art show.

Past presentations have included Caped Crusaders, American Indian PowWow, Knights of the Round Table, Star Wars, Zoo-ology, Equine Olympics, and more. Campers agree upon, then research their topics, write the script, learn supporting riding skills, design the arena (set) and make their own-and their horses’ costumes. They then set up an art show showcasing their work for the Friday presentation and Ice-Cream Social on the final day. A most favorite activity each week is painting on the horses and dressing them up for the play!

The home-like environment of HHH offers a low sensory load while providing a rich sensory diet with a 1:1 staff/camper ratio. Campers enjoy time in the Indoor and Outdoor arenas, Nature Trails, Sensory Room, PT/OT Gym, and Art Studio, while building independent skills, confidence, self-esteem, and making friends. The entire week is filled with imagination, creativity, teamwork, and laughter.

Socially mature, responsible teens ages 14 and up are invited to train as volunteer Counselors-in-Training. Adult volunteers with Art / Art Therapy, music and theater experience are especially appreciated. Volunteers who have completed horse handler training are needed from 9-11 am Mon- Thursday and 11am-2pm on Friday; arts and teaching volunteers are needed from 9-11 am Mon- Thursday and 11am-2pm on Friday.

Executive Director Lee Paradis states, “Every week, without fail, I am amazed at the thought, creativity and team-work these kids demonstrate throughout their camp experience to produce the week’s end showcase for friends and family. It is such a short time in which they accomplish so much - all while having fun in nature and an emotionally safe, inclusive environment.”  Photos from past Camp experiences are available on Facebook page:  https://www.facebook.com/horseshealinghumansconnecticut

New Campers who have not previously attended must schedule a pre-camp interview. For more information or to register, please contact horseshealinghumansinc@gmail.com  or visit the website at www.horseshealinghumansCT.org. Camp begins on July 10, 2017 and runs for six consecutive week-long sessions.   Early Registration is recommended due to the intimate size of each weekly group.  There is a no-electronics policy on campus.
