Mystic Aquarium and Atlantic White Shark Conservancy Team Up in Celebration of Sharks

Shark Week Kicks off August 9

Discovery Channel’s Shark Week has become somewhat of a pop culture phenomenon. For Mystic Aquarium and the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC), the more talk about sharks, the better. As the two New England organizations join in the excitement, they also join forces.

Mystic Aquarium and AWSC will be co-hosting a virtual Shark Trivia Challenge on Facebook Live on Tuesday, August 11 at 7pm as part of each organization’s week-long celebration of sharks. While the shark enthusiasts are technically ‘joining forces,’ the proverbial gloves will be off as the trios from each organization face-off to see who is more shark-savvy.

Friends and followers are invited not only to play along in support of their ‘side’ but also submit questions in advance - from the highly scientific to the ultra-pop culture. Those who submit a question will be entered to win a prize during the live game! Pre-register to submit trivia questions and enter to win our opportunity drawing.

The stakes are high in this virtual battle of wits! The losing organization will have to sing baby shark, while donning the opposing team’s uniform, for future broadcast on social media. Most importantly, it is critical for people to appreciate the value of these apex predator to the health of the ocean ecosystem, to understand the fact and fiction surrounding sharks and learn how they can take action to support the many endangered sharks species.

Education, conservation and research are at the heart of everything being done at Mystic Aquarium and the Atlantic While Shark Conservancy.

Based in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Atlantic While Shark Conservancy, a 501(c)(3) registered nonprofit, is committed to raising public awareness of white sharks. The Conservancy supports scientific research, improves public safety and educates the community to inspire conservation of Atlantic white sharks.

Also a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, Connecticut-based Mystic Aquarium is counted among the nation’s leading aquariums, offering exemplary care to a variety of species. Robust conservation and education programming along with unparalleled visitor experiences serve to strengthen personal connections to the animals and their environments.

Amid current safety protocols, both Mystic Aquarium and AWSC have turned to virtual programming and social media engagement in support of Shark Week 2020. Visit their individual social media channels for more information and dedicated content.
