S.T.E.P.S. Receives Grant for Summer Leadership College/Career Enrichment Program

S.T.E.P.S., Inc., has been selected by the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) as a recipient of the Summer Enrichment Innovation Grant.  They have been awarded $150,000 for their Summer Leadership College/Career Enrichment Program scheduled for July 12 - August 6.  The CSDE chose S.T.E.P.S. because they were inspired by S.T.E.P.S.' “commitment to ensure all children have access to high-quality summer enrichment opportunities.”

S.T.E.P.S. will be joined by The New London County Section of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) and Soroptimist CT Shoreline to serve a diverse group of 150 young women ages 16-19 in southeastern Connecticut.  This grant has allowed them to offer the 4-week summer program at no cost to participants, including transportation and meals.

The program will be held at local college campuses and other venues.  It will focus on college/career information and expanding the choices available to young women in our region.  Activities will include science, technology, engineering, arts and math projects.  College tours, field trips, mindfulness exercises, personal finances and Friday Fun Adventures will round out the program.

S.T.E.P.S. was created in 2008 by a group of local women who through their own experiences saw a need in the community for empowering young women.  S.T.E.P.S. has served over 1,000 young women in Groton, New London and Norwich and supported the mission of empowering girls and uplifting communities by providing young women the tools necessary to build lives of integrity and self-sufficiency through positive choice.

S.T.E.P.S. would like to thank Mayor Keith Hedrick and the City of Groton for their letter of support and continued partnership with their programs.
