Sample Sea Chanteys and Craft Beer June 25 at the Avery-Copp House

The public is invited to sample craft beers and cider and join in the chorus led by Mystic Seaport Chantey Foreman Geoff Kaufman, June 25, from 5 PM to 7 PM at the Avery-Copp House riverfront property, 154 Thames St. in Groton, CT.

The event is being sponsored by CorePlus Credit Union, Johnson’s True Value Hardware, Mazzella Carpet, Paul’s Pasta, Blue Serenity Spa, Bailey Agencies Insurance and the Rolling Tomato.

Geoff Kaufman is a museum educator known for his mastery of 19th Century sailors’ work songs, called chanteys. Used to coordinate the labor aboard wooden sailing vessels, chanteys were filled with references to the hardships, danger, freedoms and privations of life at sea. Kaufman delivers these robust songs, along with an explanation of how they were used to enliven and keep the pace of the hard, repetitive labor demanded of the men.

Kaufman has educated and entertained audiences throughout the United States and in Europe. As director of Mystic Seaport’s Sea Music Festival for over 20 years, his repertoire has been enriched by the performers he brings each year to the Seaport from around the world to participate in that event. Attendees should be prepared to sing in more than one language!

The event is a fundraiser to support the museum’s education and preservation programs. Admission is $25 in advance, $30 at the gate. Limited seating will be available, so the public is advised to a bring lawn chair or a blanket. Reservations are requested. The rain date is July 2.
