The Arc New London County Receives $2,500 Grant from Liberty Bank Foundation

Norwich, CT – The Liberty Bank Foundation has awarded a $2,500 grant to The Arc New London County to support the Arc SPARCS (Student Peer Advocates Raising Community Support) Program.

“We’re happy to support the Arc SPARCS program, which provides the tools needed to succeed in school, compete for employment, and become active and contributing members of the community,” said Diana George, manager of Liberty Bank’s Norwich office.

The SPARCS program serves 20 young men and women ages 16-23 with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) living in Southeastern CT.  A combination of classroom activities, group sessions, and team building exercises helps students learn critical transition skills, improve communication skills, and advocate for themselves and their peers in high school, on the job, and in postsecondary education settings.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the Liberty Bank Foundation has awarded over $10 million in grants to nonprofit organizations within Liberty Bank’s market area since its inception.  The foundation seeks to improve the quality of life for people of low or moderate income by investing in three areas:  education to promote economic success for children and families; affordable housing; and nonprofit capacity building.  Along with its grantmaking, the foundation strives to foster the convening and collaboration of nonprofits, funders, business, and government to address community issues.

The Arc New London County partners with people living with I/DD for EQUAL participation and inclusion in the communities of Southeastern Connecticut.  The agency offers a variety of programs including supported residences, day services, life skills/community involvement programs, in-home supports and vocational/employment training. The Arc New London County serves over 650 people and their families yearly.
