Unconscious Bias - Unveiling Racism: Equity and Inclusion in the Corporate World

The Southeastern CT Women’s Network is sponsoring a virtual panel discussion on the topic of “Equity and Inclusion - Corporate Perspectives” as part of the Unconscious Bias – Unveiling Racism” series - a free Zoom event on Thursday, June 10, 2021 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.. The panel will be moderated by Clarissa Beyah, Chief Communications Officer at Union Pacific Railroad, Professor of Professional Practice at the University of Southern California, and Founder and President of Writer's Block Ink. Panelists include: Candace Broach, Senior Manager, Central Functions and Transformation at GlaxoSmithKline, Mailee Garcia, Chief of Communications and Marketing at Heartland Alliance, Alissa Mebus, Director, Strategic Communications, UBC, and Jean Wu, Mortgage Processor at CF Bank.

Clarissa Beyah is a communications executive, educator, and non-profit founder. Currently, she is the Chief Communications Officer for Union Pacific Railroad and a Professor of Professional Practice of Journalism at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School, and helps leaders, students and organizations use strategic communications to transcend. Clarissa’s expertise spans professional services, healthcare, technology, transportation and utilities sectors. Clarissa is the Founder of the Writer’s Block Ink, www.writersblockink.org – a nonprofit organization dedicated to cultivating and launching diverse young leaders using the arts. Since its inception 17-years-ago, the Writer’s Block has helped more than 1,000 at-risk youth use the arts to transform their lives. Clarissa has led teams on nearly every continent and served as a chief communication advisor for numerous Fortune 50 companies. As an educator, Clarissa has a track record for engaging and empowering youth.

Clarissa is a member of the Arthur Page Society and Leadership Greater Washington. She has a BA in English from Rowan University and an MBA in Strategic Management from the University of New Haven. She has three children and enjoys travelling, writing and hiking.

 

Candace Broach is a communications professional providing expertise to multinational and Fortune 500 companies. Candace is Senior Manager, Central Functions and Transformation at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), where she works on a global team supporting Consumer Healthcare. Before that, Candace served as Senior Manager, Vaccine Communications, to support the high-impact launch of GSK’s newest vaccine, SHINGRIX, which is currently transforming the face of adult immunization. Before joining GSK, Candace spent nearly ten years at Pfizer cross-training in digital, leadership, and corporate communications, where she developed and implemented communications strategies, created multimedia communications programs, managed digital content, key messages, and announcements. Candace is a skilled video producer and on-camera counselor with a passion for storytelling focused on delivering customized solutions to support strategic communications and business results. She has served as the voice of numerous corporate video integrations. Candace holds a degree in English from The University of Connecticut. She lives in Philadelphia, PA.

 

Mailee Ua Garcia is a diverse senior communications professional with18-years of experience across non-profit, retail, healthcare, manufacturing, financial services and technology sectors. She currently serves as Chief of Communications and Marketing for Heartland Alliance, a global human rights non-profit organization that serves the most vulnerable through direct service programs and policy change. In this capacity, she oversees the strategy and execution of the organization’s internal/external communications, digital/social presence, marketing initiatives, content curation, brand management, thought leadership, and issues management. Prior to this role, Mailee was PR lead for GE Transportation where she was responsible for effectively developing and executing the company’s media relations efforts, thought leadership and issues management. Preceding this role, Mailee was charged with shaping the public’s perception of Walgreens through various PR programs to deepen consumer engagement and sales. She began her corporate communications career with Discover Financial Services and Diners Club International. She holds a bachelor's degree in public relations from Illinois State University and a master's degree in integrated marketing communications from Roosevelt University. In her spare time, she enjoys Chicago’s dining and entertainment scene, as well as travelling and exploring different cultures.

Jean Wu is a finance professional who recently joined the mortgage banking team with CF Bank. Previously she was managing a team with JP Morgan Chase Wealth Management Operations providing client data and account maintenance for 3 different lines of businesses (Private Bank, boutique brokerage-JPM and Chase Wealth Management). She was also a successful entrepreneur from 2002-2017 with a retail tea business where the mission was centered around cultural commonalities through the experience of tea drinking and tea culture from around the world. In addition, Jean proudly served as a United States Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer, deployed to the Persian Gulf 3 times. Jean holds a degree in International Studies from The Ohio State University. She is passionate about her Australian Cattle Dog Johnny Jay Cash and currently lives in Columbus, Ohio.
