United Way Announces Over $2.6 million in Funding to Local Health and Human Services

United Way of Southeastern Connecticut’s Board of Directors has approved fund distributions in the amount of $2,519,460 for the fiscal year 2016-16. This funding supports 47 programs at 21 nonprofit organizations in New London County that work together to provide a network of safety net of services to help those in need.

In addition to these distributions, United Way 2-1-1 receives $52,492. 2-1-1 is a 24-hour information and referral helpline that is available free of charge to anyone in Connecticut. The American Red Cross will also receive $63,684 for two programs – Armed Forces Emergency Services and Disaster Services, and the Independent Development Account (IDA) program receives $5,000.

Leading the program review and fund distribution are trained volunteers who live or work in New London County. Volunteer teams are convened to evaluate program performance and analyze program results. There is a separate volunteer Financial Review Panel with fiscal expertise that carefully assesses the financial health of all agencies.

United Way’s Allocations Cabinet Co-chairs, Denise Stapienski of Chelsea Groton Bank and Ray Stanley, a retiree from Electric Boat, then bring funding recommendations made by the local volunteers to United Way of Southeastern Connecticut’s Board of Directors for approval.
