USCGA Athletics Chooses McKenna as Associate AD for Finance, Facilities and Logistics

New London, CT – Director of Athletics Tim Fitzpatrick has announced the appointment of Tamara McKenna as the Associate Athletic Director for Finance, Facilities and Logistics.  A 1987 graduate of CGA with a B.S degree in Management, she most recently served in the academy's Admissions Division as Associate Director of Admissions for Volunteer Programs from 2006 to present. She holds a Master of Business Administration from George Mason University.

McKenna's selection marks a significant milestone in the history of athletics at the academy, as she becomes the first female graduate of the academy to ever serve in a senior level athletics administration position.  With her selection, five women now hold senior staff positions at CGA in the Athletics division – demonstrating a very strong commitment to diversity and inclusion. During her cadet years, she participated as a varsity cadet-athlete in both gymnastics and rowing.

"We are pleased and proud that Tamara has agreed to join our staff in this very important position," said Fitzpatrick. "She brings a wealth of valuable knowledge and very diverse experience to the table that will benefit the Athletics division in many, many ways. Due to the strength of the partnership that exists between Athletics and Admissions at CGA, Tamara is already very familiar with the internal operations of the division and as a result will make a significant contribution to the success of our program quickly. This position is vital to the successful, efficient operation of the total Athletic program and I am confident she will be a major contributor in many important ways."

In addition to her 10-year tenure in Admissions at CGA, Tamara also served as a Project Manager for Sonalysts, Inc. from 2001-06, worked with Booz Allen in McLean, Va. after serving on active duty for five years following her graduation from the Academy.

"As an Associate Director of Admissions for Volunteer Programs, I've had the honor to interact with bright and talented high schools students at the start of their Academy experience. I see this position as a next step and a new challenge," said McKenna. "Athletics is a significant part of the academy experience. It is a means for cadets to understand new levels of leadership, teamwork and competition, and establish healthy and balanced routines, that they will need as Coast Guard officers. I look forward to working with the outstanding coaches, faculty and staff in the Athletics Division."

Tamara and her husband Bob reside in Mystic, Conn. They have two daughters – Daria, who is a 2/c member of the CGA women's lacrosse team, and Julia, who is a 2016 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and currently holds the rank of Ensign.  McKenna will officially begin work at CGA Athletics on April 2.
