The Dewart Building at 300 State Street

The Dewart Building at 300 State Street is home to an eclectic mix of business, service, retail and arts spaces. Located in historic downtown New London, designed by local architect Dudley St. Clair Donnelly, who is also responsible for the Mercer Building, ISAAC School building, and the downtown Citizens Bank, it was built in 1912 with a marble entryway, brass handrails on the stairs and still preserves most of the original architectural detail, woodworking and mail chute. The building’s name changed when William J. Dewart bought it a few years later. Dewart obtained his fortune while serving as business manager for Frank Munsey, a New York publishing giant who was responsible for building the Mohican Hotel across the street in 1896.

Whether a suite of offices overlooking the Garde Marquee, or a smaller boutique space for a graphic designer, visual artist, lawyer, therapist or artist, the five stories of the Dewart building are among the most vibrant work spaces in the city.
