Members Salute Military Forces and Families

Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT members proudly support our military community.

Throughout eastern CT’s history, our region has been an important base of operations for military personnel. Today, we are home to over 21,500 military personnel, 6,500 of whom serve Naval Submarine Base New London. There are roughly 12,000 military family members in the region, and thousands of people are employed in contracting and support operations for military installations.

It is for these reasons that the Chamber and our members come together to provide services for military personnel, veterans, spouses, and families.

For example, the Chamber’s Military Affairs Committee recently led the collection of over 100 suits for veterans entering the workforce, with special assistance from Navy Federal Credit Union, the Antonino Auto Group, and Mystic Marriott.

The Committee also coordinates a Service Person of the Month ceremony, in which a selected local active-duty service member is recognized for outstanding accomplishments. This individual is presented with gifts and certificates as a token of appreciation from many of the region’s businesses.

The Eastern CT Workforce Investment Board (EWIB)’s American Job Center East provides information about jobs, labor market dynamics, workshops, and more, with an emphasis on connecting veterans with jobs.

Mohegan Sun and the Mohegan Tribe produce an annual Vets Rock Expo, featuring special services and activities for veterans and their families, a veteran-specific career fair, professional attire fitting, free workshops, free health screenings and more. The Chamber is excited to partner with Mohegan Sun for the 5th Annual Vets Rock Expo, taking place this November.

Foxwoods Resort Casino and the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation prioritize hiring veterans and thank them by way of producing an annual Veterans Powwow at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center and a Veterans Day parade through Foxwoods.

Navy Federal Credit Union, with locations in Groton and New London, offers financial services specifically designed for active-duty military personnel and veterans.

Similarly, eastern CT’s smaller businesses eagerly support personnel and their families:
High Hopes Therapeutic Riding of Old Lyme offers equine-assisted therapy for local veterans affected by PTSD.
Mike’s Famous Harley-Davidson of New London works with the Wounded Warrior Project to improve the lives of service men and women living with PTSD and physical handicaps.
Fields of Fire of Mystic regularly produces military-themed events and offers significant discounts for military personnel.
Country Glen Apartments of Groton works closely with the Submarine Base to ensure that local military personnel and families have suitable housing.
