Spring/Summer 2015
Spring is in the air, summer's on its way and it’s time to dive into applications for Project Oceanology’s ocean-rich summer camps. Project O’s marine science education camps include time aboard our Enviro-Lab Research Vessels and our fleet of small boats. You’ll find our camp schedule and application at www.oceanology.org
Here is a preview of the camps:
Ocean Camp for grades 5-12 is a weeklong residential camp of hands-on, brains-on marine science. Campers cruise the waters of Long Island Sound and conduct oceanographic research as they study salt marshes, rocky intertidal zones, sandy beaches and near-shore marine life.
Ocean Explorer Academy for grades 4-6 is a weeklong day camp where campers roll up their sleeves and get their hands wet. Participants explore Long Island Sound, rocky shores, salt marshes and barrier beaches. They also discover the vital role habitats play in our coastal ecosystems by using scientific instruments, such as trawl and plankton nets and water chemistry kits.
Project Oceanology is in its 43rd year of nurturing interest and enthusiasm for science and for our planet’s marine environment from its waterfront headquarters at Avery Point in Groton. Our marine scientists annually assist more than 25,000 students and adults in their exploration of marine life and ecosystems in our surrounding waters of Long Island Sound, Fishers Island Sound and the Thames River.
Project O offers floating laboratory programs aboard its Enviro-Lab research vessels during the school year and in summer day and residential camps. Students immerse themselves in hands-on, brains-on studies of marine science and its elements of biology, chemistry, geology and physics. Our marine resource center includes research laboratories and a hostel accommodating more than 50 overnight guests.
Winter seal watch cruises bring families to see these playful marine mammals in their natural seasonal habitat of Fishers Island Sound, as do winter eagle watch cruises on the Connecticut River. Project O also takes summer visitors on lighthouse cruises to Ledge Lighthouse at the mouth of the Thames River.
Project Oceanology is a non-profit organization operated by an association of public and private schools, colleges and universities.
