Retired Marine Corps Major General Mike Lehnert to speak at Mitchell College
America's all-volunteer military force, environmental policy, drones and Guantanamo will be topics of discussion at Mitchell College when Retired Marine Corps Major General Mike Lehnert speaks and participates in breakout sessions at Mitchell College on Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11 starting at 10:00 a.m. All sessions are free and open to the public. Lehnert, a key player in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo, will deliver a keynote address at 10 a.m. called 'War Without End: The All-Volunteer Force, the American People and Our Nation's Enemies.' Lehnert wrote, "While it would be entirely accurate to say that the all-volunteer force has provided our nation with the best military we've ever had, it comes at a significant cultural and political cost." He will address both the pros and cons of this policy and ask the audience to examine their own role in America?s participatory democracy whose freedoms come at such a great cost to so few. In the afternoon, there will be three breakout sessions: 1:30-2:15 p.m. Environmental Policy - a discussion on how best to work with environmental groups, the government and independent vested interests to effectively achieve mutually beneficial results 2:30-3:15 p.m. Drafts and Drones - a continuation of the keynote discussion on the pros, cons and implications of an all-volunteer force 3:30-4:15 p.m. Guantanamo - ethical decision-making, leadership, and other challenges in the War on Terror Lehnert comes to Mitchell College as a Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow, and so will conduct classes and seminars for students on November 10 in addition to meeting with students and faculty members informally throughout the two days to share his expertise. Lehnert's visit is particularly apt for Mitchell College which is an approved Yellow Ribbon School, a Military Friendly School, and is know for its support and welcoming environment for Veterans including the Veteran Study Lounge, which was dedicated last year. Admission to the keynote speech and the breakout sessions are free and open to the public. Free parking is available in the Pequot Avenue l
