Ribbon Cutting: Coogan Farm Welcome Center
The Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center will officially open the John E. Avery Farmhouse and Welcome Center, and the Jules X. Schneider Barn for Nature and the Arts at its Coogan Farm property.
Governor Dannel Malloy, Congressman Joe Courtney, and many local and state officials will join us for this momentous occasion. The ceremony will be OUTDOORS, so please be prepared for the weather (hat, sunscreen, etc.).
PARKING: Limited VIP parking is available on site. Primary parking will be in the North/supplemental lot of the Mystic Seaport (the one closest to Coogan Farm). Shuttles will be running.
About:
The Nature Center purchased the 45 acre property in 2013 after a two-year fundraising campaign. After extensive renovations to the farmhouse and barn, and construction of a parking lot and other property improvements, the facility is ready to open to the public.
The date of the grand opening is significant because it was on that exact date in 1946 that a group of Mystic and area citizens met and created the Pequotsepos Wildlife Sanctuary, founded to preserve natural resources and educate the public about the environment. 70 years later, the DPNC is fulfilling that founding principle even more, with the official dedication of the buildings at Coogan Farm.
