SECWAC Presents: 'Order and Chaos in the Middle East; America and the Legacy of the 1916 Sykes Picot-Agreement'
Jonathan Stevenson is a Senior Fellow for U.S. Defense at the UK-based International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), and is editor of its Strategic Comments journal. From 2005-2016 he was a Professor of Strategic Studies at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, RI. He also served as National Security Council Director for Political-Military Affairs (Middle East and North Africa) at the White House from 2011 to 2013. Prior to joining the Naval War College, he was a Senior Fellow for Counter-Terrorism, and Editor of Strategic Survey, at IISS. He has published several books and monographs, and numerous policy articles on terrorism, political Islam, and Middle East and African security in journals such as Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, The National Interest, and Survival. Recently, he coauthored an article in the Nov/Dec 2015 issue of Foreign Affairs with Steven Simon entitled “The End of Pax Americana: Why Washington’s Middle East Pullback Makes Sense”. During the 1990s he covered Sub-Sahara Africa and Northern Ireland for The Economist, Newsweek, The New Republic, and other publications. Before turning to international affairs, Mr Stevenson practiced law in New York. He has a B.A. degree from the University of Chicago, and a J.D. from Boston University School of Law.
