Chamber music came into its own in the Classical era, ca. 1775-1810. "Papa" Haydn was a towering figure at the beginning and throughout this rich period, and young colleague Mozart was the other pole in a brilliant firmament across western Europe. The piano trio was probably the most beloved ensemble of the time, in part because gifted amateurs and professionals were able to read through new scores together. Violin sonatas were another favorite pairing, for the same reason.

Outstanding pianist Michael Bahmann brought his 1780s Viennese piano (a superb modern copy) to La Grua, an ideal acoustic for music making on an intimate scale. With him came violinist Jesse Holstein and cellist Miguel Vásquez, modern players with a strong affinity for the deft, transparent style and sound of Classical-era strings. The recorded results of their early-afternoon session in the resonant hall are truly worth a listen.
