New Alliance Foundation Assists TVCCA’s Senior Nutrition Program

The New Alliance Foundation has awarded Thames Valley Council for Community Action’s Senior Nutrition Program $3,500 to assist with the costs of providing meals to homebound seniors in Columbia, Coventry, Danielson, Dayville Putnam, Willington, Willimantic, and Woodstock through its Meals on Wheels program. “We’re so grateful that the New Alliance Foundation is partnering with us to assist our program in these towns especially,” noted Eugene Theroux, TVCCA’s Director of Senior Nutrition. “In these communities, 78% of our seniors qualify as low or very-low income, with many receiving only Social Security to support themselves.

Senior Nutrition meals offer these residents a way to stretch their tight budgets.” Senior Nutrition meals benefit low-income elders in a variety of other ways too, said Mr. Theroux, adding that some seniors’ social isolation and lack of economic resources make them susceptible to a higher incidence of chronic health conditions that correlate with poor nutrition. “These illnesses afflict 78% of clients we currently serve in the towns that New Alliance is helping us support. The good news is that with the Foundation’s help, our specially tailored meals can mitigate the severity of these and other chronic illnesses.”
