SECWAC Presents: William J. Holstein on “U.S.-Chinese Relations: The Storm Ahead?"

Thursday, January 30, 2025 (5:30 PM - 7:00 PM) (EST)

Description

Join the Southeast Connecticut World Affairs Council (SECWAC) for a presentation by William J. Holstein titled "U.S.-Chinese Relations: The Storm Ahead?".

After years of building tensions, President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to rachet up tariffs against China by up to 60 percent. American consumers and American businesses will feel the pain, and the government of Xi Jinping will almost certainly retaliate against American interests. Xi is a Marxist nationalist, meaning he believes that Western capitalistic democracies must be overcome. To that end, China’s support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Iran’s campaign to encircle Israel shows no sign of abating. China’s cyberwar against America’s Information Technology systems also has reached new heights. It is a kind of confrontation the United States has never before experienced. What is the way forward?
