Academic Specialist - Avery Point

Under the supervision of the UConn Avery Point Academic Center (APAC) director, the Academic Specialist assists in the supervision of the tutoring center and its staff consisting of undergraduate student peer tutors and undergraduate front desk staff. The Specialist helps cultivate a welcoming environment in the Academic Center to help staff help students reach their academic goals.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Academic Center director in supervising the center and its staff, contributing to the efficient oversight and organization of the space
  • Communicate with the Center director to optimize working experiences for staff and tutoring experiences for students as well as to effectively problem solve
  • Provide and assist with academic tutoring for Avery Point students in Specialist’s proficient subject areas
  • Assist in planning, organizing, and facilitating workshops within college classrooms to help supplement instruction and provide students with engaging and informative learning experiences
  • Assist Center director with tasks such as coordinating events and trainings
  • Create and distribute promotional materials for the Center
  • Promote a culture of advocacy for Center staff through communicating effectively with leadership
  • Encourage values of diversity and the importance of inclusion and respect for all
  • Facilitate communication across various departments working closely with Avery Point faculty and staff

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills to facilitate effective communication and collaboration with students, Center staff, Center director, and Avery Point faculty and staff
  • Ability to be versatile, delegate tasks, problem solve, and easily adapt to changing priorities
  • Tutoring experience at the collegiate level
  • Supervisory experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with low-income, college first-generation, and underrepresented students

Other Information:

  • This is a part-time position, 10-20 hours per week
  • This is an on-site, in-person position. All work will be performed at the UConn Avery Point campus.
  • The APAC’s operating hours are Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Employee’s schedule will be discussed upon hire, will fall within these hours.
  • Pay rate is $24/hour
  • This is a temporary contract position. Contracts will be issued on a semester-by-semester basis  
  • The Academic Specialist is not eligible for University benefits
  • Employment is contingent on a successful background check
