Community Liaison

The Connecticut Port Authority is excited to announce an opening for a Community Liaison position. This is a full-time, in-office position based in Old Saybrook, with regular business hours from Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The position also offers the opportunity to travel throughout the state, including visits to coastal businesses, community events, and stakeholder meetings. Some evening and weekend hours may be required to support special events and engagements. This is a dynamic role ideal for someone who enjoys building relationships, working in the community, and promoting meaningful initiatives that support Connecticut's maritime economy.

About the Agency:

The Connecticut Port Authority (CPA) located in Old Saybrook, Connecticut is a quasi-public agency responsible for marketing and coordinating the development of the state's ports and maritime economy. It is the mission of the CPA to grow Connecticut's economy and create jobs by strategically investing in the state's three deepwater ports and small harbors to enable each to maximize its own economic potential.

Reporting Structure:

Works under the direct supervision of the Executive Director. Works independently with acquired experience.

Scope of Work:

The Community Liaison is responsible for fostering relationships between Connecticut Port Authority and the local communities it serves. The Community Liaison serves as a channel for the sharing and receiving of information, promotes CPA's mission and facilitates collaboration amongst State and local governments and business organizations.

Essential Duties:

  • Facilitate communication and collaboration between Connecticut Port Authority, State and local governments, business organizations and the community.
  • Coordinate the development and implementation of programs and services to enhance the presence of the Connecticut Port Authority within municipalities and businesses.
  • Build and maintain relationships with local stakeholders, including community leaders, business owners, and residents.
  • Gather feedback from community members and share it with internal stakeholders.
  • Collect and maintain data of community contacts, interactions and activities for the establishment of a Maritime Directory.
  • Provide updates on all active projects being undertaken by recipients of Grant funding provided by CPA through ongoing communication with recipients. (e.g. SHIPP etc.)
  • Act as a point of contact for inquiries and feedback related to any port operations within the three deepwater ports, maritime activities, and environmental issues.
  • Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with all State agencies.
  • Hosting workshops, presentations, and tours to educate the public about the maritime industry and its presence in the State of Connecticut.
  • Working with schools, non-profit organizations, and community groups to support local initiatives and projects such as community events, educational programs, and volunteer opportunities.
  • Represent Connecticut Port Authority at community events and meetings
  • Performs related duties as required.

  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work well with all levels of internal management and staff, outside agencies and vendors.
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong research and technology skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of experience in a role associated with the maritime economy.
  • 2+ years of experience in community engagement, outreach, or related field.
  • Familiarity with the local community and its stakeholders.
