A Banner Year for Business: Chamber Celebrates Surge in Small Business Growth with Abundance of Ribbon Cuttings

The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut is marking a major mid-year milestone, having hosted 13 ribbon cuttings thus far, including eight in June alone—a seven-event increase over the same time last year. This pace puts the Chamber on track to surpass its 2024 total of 25 business celebrations, highlighting a clear surge in local business launches and expansions.

“This momentum goes far beyond ribbon cuttings—it signals growing investor confidence and reflects the Chamber’s role in shaping a resilient and opportunity-rich economy,” states Tony Sheridan, Chamber President and CEO.

“While national headlines spotlight economic uncertainty, our region is telling a different story,” emphasizes Chamber Board Chair Tony Joyce.

“Entrepreneurs are choosing to invest and grow here—creating jobs, driving innovation, and strengthening communities. That says a lot about the spirit of eastern Connecticut and the supportive environment we’ve built together,” Joyce adds.

The Chamber’s focus on small business success is at the core of this growth. From budding family-run startups to franchise partners and professional service providers, the Chamber provides critical resources, guidance, and connections to businesses at every stage.

This support aligns with broader statewide trends indicating a strong entrepreneurial climate.

In 2025, Connecticut ranked:

• 13th best state for entrepreneurs
• 5th in the nation for consumer spending growth, with a 5.2% year-over-year increase

The growing numbers prove small businesses are a powerful engine of the state’s economy:

• 381,129 small businesses make up 99.4% of all businesses in Connecticut
• Nearly half of the state’s workforce (48.1%) is employed by small businesses
• In 2023, banks issued over $855 million in loans to businesses earning under $1 million annually

This trajectory is why the Chamber invests in initiatives like the annual Entrepreneur Academy, an 8-week program in its third year – which is now accepting applications for its September 2025 cohort, equipping aspiring and early-stage business owners with the knowledge, tools, and mentors needed to succeed.
