The Southeast Area Women & Girls Fund of the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut has awarded $16,325 to the Thames Valley Council for Community Action (TVCCA) to support essential Senior Nutrition services for New London women age 62+ with limited resources. The funding will help vulnerable older women remain healthy, independent, and safe in their homes. For more than 50 years, TVCCA’s Senior Nutrition Program has provided Meals on Wheels for homebound seniors and congregate lunches at area senior centers, ensuring elders receive nutritious meals, regular safety checks, and vital social engagement. These services play a crucial role in preventing food insecurity, managing chronic illness, and reducing social isolation—challenges faced by many New London women living alone. “Social isolation can be extremely detrimental to the health and wellbeing of frail elders,” said Eugene Theroux, TVCCA’s Director of Nutrition Services. “Our drivers and staff often provide the only personal contact a senior may have all day. Whether it’s a friendly conversation at the door or companionship at our congregate lunch sites, these connections are just as important as the meals themselves.” TVCCA’s meal services help stabilize health, support aging in place, and link seniors to additional TVCCA programs such as energy assistance, transportation vouchers, and housing supports. “Our nutrition programs receive only a portion of their funding from state and federal sources,” added Mr. Theroux. “Partners like the Community Foundation make it possible for us to deliver more than 270,000 meals each year to seniors across our region.” For more information about TVCCA’s services, as well as those that support elders’ independence, please call Community Services at (860) 886-1720 or visit tvcca.or
