The Connecticut Humane Society is excited to announce a leadership transition effective January 1st, 2026. Kerry Garofano will step into the role of Director of Development, Marketing, and Outreach, while Barbara Naugle, after 13 years of service, will be retiring from her role as Director. Kerry brings deep experience and passion to this role. Since 2015, she has led annual giving, grants, and planned giving programs, while also guiding the marketing, communications, education, and outreach teams. Her commitment to animal welfare began early, inspired by witnessing someone she knew struggle to care for too many pets and ultimately lose their home. “I’m honored to step into this role and grateful to work alongside a dedicated team of staff, board members and volunteers committed to changing the lives of pets and the people who love them,” Kerry shared. “Behind every pet is a story, and through the lens of fundraising, marketing and outreach, I look forward to building on our strong foundation to engage as many caring hearts as possible in each pet’s journey.” Through her work, Kerry has seen firsthand the many paths that lead people to animal welfare. In her new role, she will continue sharing how CHS saves pets’ lives every day, inviting the community to make animals part of their legacy, and inspiring learners of all ages to create a better world for animals. Kerry holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Union College, a Master’s in Animals and Public Policy from Tufts University, and the prestigious Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) credential. In addition, Kerry serves on the boards of the New England Federation of Humane Societies and the Estate and Tax Planning Council of Eastern Connecticut. As CHS welcomes Kerry into her new role, heartfelt gratitude is extended to Barb for her remarkable legacy. During her tenure, Barb expanded the total funds raised from $1.7 million in 2013 to over $4 million in 2025, introduced innovative funding tools such as e-giving and social media marketing, and most recently led a successful $15.2 million capital campaign that made CHS’ new Pet Resource Center in Wilton, CT a reality. “Mostly, I look forward to spending time with my family and our sweet pup, Penny, while pursuing a variety of ‘right-brain’ creative endeavors,” Barb said. “I’m deeply grateful to the Board and our donors who made my time at CT Humane so rich and rewarding.” James Bias, Executive Director of the Connecticut Humane Society noted: “Barb’s had a tremendous impact on the organization over the years – not just externally through meaningful connections in the community, but also internally on the structure and growth of the team. While we’ll miss her here at CHS, we’re very grateful for her contributions and wish her well in her next adventure. The future here at CHS is in great hands with Kerry, who has been a leader within the organization for 10+ years and will continue to steer her teams into success through stewardship for pets.” About the Connecticut Humane Society The Connecticut Humane Society is the leading resource in the state for companion animal welfare, enriching the lives of families and communities through adoption services, medical care, education, and prevention of cruelty.
