Expansion of Bradley International Airport’s Security Checkpoint Complete, Open to Passengers

After more than three years of construction to expand and enhance many elements of the terminal at Bradley International Airport (BDL), the Connecticut Airport Authority (CAA) is pleased to announce the completed expansion of the main Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security checkpoint, which is now fully operational for passengers.

“The CAA is pleased to make the passenger experience even more convenient at Bradley International Airport with the introduction of two additional TSA lanes in the airport’s main security checkpoint,” said Michael W. Shea, Executive Director and CEO of the CAA. “We want to thank the TSA for its partnership with this expansion, which now offers more screening locations to expedite the security process and more queuing space for passengers.”

The expansion of the TSA checkpoint was made possible by the removal of the centrally located exit lane that arriving passengers had been using for years to get to baggage claim and ground transportation in the airport’s lower level. Recently added exit corridors on the east and west sides of the terminal now serve as the main exit points to those lower-level locations for passengers.

“The newly expanded checkpoint with two additional lanes and more queueing space will lead to a more streamlined security screening process for passengers,” said Bill Csontos, TSA Federal Security Director for Connecticut. “TSA PreCheck Touchless ID is also available at this checkpoint, which will help reduce wait times and marks another step forward in modernizing airport security and improving the passenger journey.”

The checkpoint reconfiguration also has enhanced overhead signage, which helps direct passengers to the following lanes: 

Standard Screening

Available to passengers who do not participate in expedited screening programs.  

TSA PreCheck (enrollment required)

After being temporarily consolidated to BDL’s secondary screening location in the terminal, TSA PreCheck is once again available at the main security checkpoint. The trusted traveler program allows eligible passengers to move through airport security more quickly and conveniently – while leaving laptops and approved liquids in their carry-on bags.

TSA PreCheck Touchless ID (enrollment required)

TSA PreCheck members can now confirm their identity when going through security by using facial recognition technology instead of presenting a physical ID – allowing for faster security processing. In order to use this new program, passengers must log into their airline’s frequent flyer account, opt in for Touchless ID, and enter their TSA PreCheck Known Traveler Number and passport information. Currently, not all airlines are connected to the Touchless ID program. At BDL, qualifying passengers flying American, Delta, United and Southwest are able to use this new lane.

CLEAR (enrollment required)

Uses biometric technology to verify a traveler’s identity through a fingerprint or eye scan. CLEAR members can use dedicated lanes to complete the verification process before proceeding to TSA screening.

Priority

Designated screening for travelers with premium cabin tickets, frequent- flyer status, or other qualifying benefits.

Wheelchair Access

Makes screening process more accessible for passengers who use wheelchairs or have mobility limitations.

The secondary TSA security checkpoint at BDL, which is located closer to the Sheraton Hotel, is still open to screen passengers who have TSA PreCheck or CLEAR Plus with TSA PreCheck.
