Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut Announces Plans for 38-Home Neighborhood

Government People

Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut continues to build hope and homes in the region and is proud to announce plans to develop a 38-home neighborhood on Colby Drive in Ledyard. The Ledyard Planning and Zoning Commission granted approval with conditions for the future development. Every home will be sold with an affordable mortgage, where housing costs (mortgage, taxes, insurance) will not exceed 30% of the homeowner’s income.

The project calls for a mixture of two-, three-, and four-bedroom residences, 27 single family homes, and 11 multi-family homes. The project is being funded by grants and private donations. By partnering with future homeowners, Habitat for Humanity helps to build financial independence, create generational wealth, and contribute to healthy communities. These homes will be sold to families invested in the program through sweat equity, a financial commitment, and a need for safe and equitable housing.

Sarah Lufler, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity notes, “It is with great pride we announce the approval of the neighborhood, to be located between the high school and the center of town. It will provide walkable options for residents to grocery stores, dining, recreation, the library, and employment opportunities.  It’s a huge project necessitating many committed partners. Our deepest gratitude to Mayor Fred Allyn III, Elizabeth Burdick, Steve Masalin, and their team at the Ledyard town offices for their time, effort, and support.”

The date for breaking ground is to be announced.

Community volunteers are encouraged to email engage@habitatect.org to get involved with the building process.  Potential homeowners can visit the Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut website at habitatect.org to find out more on affordable and equitable homeownership, or contact the Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut Office by telephone at (860) 442-7890.
