By Tony Sheridan, President & CEO, Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut Across the country, economic uncertainty dominates headlines. But here in eastern Connecticut, we’re witnessing something different—and inspiring. So far in 2025, the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut has hosted 13 ribbon cuttings, with eight last month (in June) alone. That’s seven more than this time last year, and we’re on track to exceed our 2024 total of 25 business celebrations. But these aren’t just ceremonial milestones, they’re real indicators of momentum, confidence, and a thriving local economy. Behind each ribbon we cut is a story: a family taking a leap of faith, a professional striking out on their own, or a franchise expanding into new territory. And behind each of those stories is a growing belief that eastern Connecticut is a place where businesses, especially small businesses, can succeed. That’s something worth paying attention to. Entrepreneurs across the region are choosing to invest, hire, and innovate right here in our communities. They’re creating jobs, reviving main streets, and adding new energy to our neighborhoods. This is not just economic development, it’s a movement fueled by vision, ambition, and community support. It’s also no accident. The Chamber has made small business support a top priority, offering the tools, mentorship, and connectivity that entrepreneurs need to navigate early challenges and scale with confidence, like the Entrepreneur Academy which just opened enrollment. Our goal is to meet business owners where they are—and help them grow. The results speak for themselves—and they align with broader statewide trends that are equally encouraging. All around us, small businesses are reshaping the landscape of Connecticut. They account for the majority of businesses in the state and provide livelihoods for nearly half our workforce. In just the past year, hundreds of millions in small business loans helped turn ideas into storefronts, services, and community staples. These are more than just numbers—they represent dreams pursued, families supported, and local pride renewed. The momentum is clear, and the opportunity is ours to seize. Now is the time for us to rally behind our small businesses, supporting their growth, celebrating their success, and investing in the economic vitality they bring. This region is full of compelling reasons to live, work, and invest locally. At the Chamber, we’re proud to highlight these strengths between communities, employers, and industries by offering a wide range of services—from member event hostings to leadership development programs, to entrepreneurial resources and professional networking opportunities. I strongly encourage everyone to get involved and discover what makes our local business community so vibrant—whether through our website (chamberect.com) or by connecting with our knowledgeable staff. Together, we will thrive and continue to make a positive impact for years to come.
