The announcement that Applied Physical Sciences (APS), a General Dynamics company, plans to establish its headquarters within READCO's proposed Stonington Technology Park is exactly the type of investment Eastern Connecticut should welcome and encourage.

APS's expansion, combined with READCO's vision for an integrated technology corridor and the proposed mixed-use Stonington Village development along Route 2, reflects a comprehensive approach to economic development. It demonstrates what can be achieved when employers, developers, local officials, and communities work together toward a common goal.

Eastern Connecticut is experiencing unprecedented growth driven by defense manufacturing, engineering, research and development, and the continued expansion of the submarine industrial base. The challenge before us is not whether growth is coming, but whether we are prepared to support it.

Housing remains an essential part of that discussion. Our region needs additional housing options across a range of price points to attract and retain the engineers, technicians, skilled tradespeople, healthcare workers, educators, and young professionals needed by our growing economy.

However, housing alone will not sustain our success.

We must also create the commercial, infrastructure, and employment opportunities necessary to support a modern workforce. Technology parks, innovation centers, and thoughtfully planned mixed-use developments provide the space businesses need to grow while creating vibrant communities where people can live, work, shop, and connect.

The Route 2 corridor is uniquely positioned to help meet those needs. As a gateway connecting Interstate 95, Stonington, Norwich, Groton, New London, and neighboring Rhode Island communities, it offers an opportunity to accommodate growth while strengthening regional connectivity. READCO's mixed-use development proposal recognizes that successful communities require more than housing. They require a balanced approach that integrates residential, commercial, and employment opportunities.

Residents are right to ask questions about traffic, infrastructure, and community impact.

Those questions deserve careful analysis and thoughtful planning. At the same time, we should recognize that responsible growth can strengthen both our economy and our quality of life.

Importantly, the permitting and regulatory authorities involved in reviewing these projects deserve recognition for their professionalism, flexibility, and commitment to timely decision-making. As our region faces increasing economic opportunities, it is essential that public agencies continue to work collaboratively with applicants and communities to ensure projects receive thorough review while avoiding unnecessary delays. Predictable and responsive permitting processes are critical to maintaining our region's competitiveness.

READCO has been investing in Eastern Connecticut for decades and has demonstrated a long-term commitment to the communities it serves. The proposed Stonington Technology Park and Stonington Village development represent significant investments in the future of our region and in the workforce that will power our economy for years to come.

As Eastern Connecticut continues to grow, we should hold developments to high standards while embracing opportunities that create jobs, expand housing options, strengthen our tax base, and enhance our communities. The APS expansion and READCO's vision for the Route 2 corridor represent exactly the kind of thoughtful, balanced growth that can help ensure a strong and sustainable future for Eastern Connecticut.
