On Thursday, September 11, the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut welcomed a dynamic group of 36 professionals to its Leadership Eastern Connecticut Program, aimed at advancing leadership skills and community impact across the region. Participants gathered at the Regional Innovation Center in New London for orientation and opening remarks from Tony Sheridan, Chamber President and CEO, Denise Desrochers, Program and Events Manager, and a keynote welcome by Mayor Mike Passero. The day also included team-building activities, words of encouragement from the Class of 2026 Co-Presidents, introduction to the alum planning team, and testimonies from the Class of 25 and 26’s community service project recipients, United Way of Southeastern Connecticut and UCP of Eastern Connecticut. “This program is about preparing leaders who will shape the future of our region—not just in business, but in service—by expanding their skillsets, strengthening their networks, and deepening their understanding of what it takes to lead with purpose in a changing world,” said Sheridan. Now entering its 38th year, the Leadership Eastern Connecticut Program has graduated more than 700 individuals since its inception in 1987. Participants engage in monthly sessions exploring topics like economic development, education, healthcare, military affairs, and DEI, with site visits, hands-on learning, and access to key institutions and thought leaders. This year’s Class of 2027 represents a diverse mix of professionals from leading regional employers such as Dominion Energy, Eversource, Foxwoods, General Dynamics Electric Boat, Great Wolf Lodge, Mohegan Sun, Pfizer, Charter Oak Federal Credit Union, Chelsea Groton Bank, Groton Public Utilities, and Mystic Aquarium, amidst the following small businesses and non-profits: Ascend Bank, Elevate to Even Plus, High Hopes Therapeutic Riding, Main Steet Creative LLC, Montville Florist, Mystic Museum of Art, Norwich Public Utilities, O’Grady’s Junk Removal, Pat Munger Construction Company Inc., Reliance Health Inc, Safe Futures, Inc., Scient Federal Credit Union, Tobin, Carberry, O'Malley, Riley & Selinger, P.C. (TCORS), and United Community and Family Services. A hallmark of the program is the capstone community service project, where class members collaborate to support a local nonprofit. Reflecting on her own recent experience, Nicole Cabrera, Class of 2026 Co-President, shared: “Being part of the Leadership ECT Program is more than professional development - it’s a transformational experience. This program empowers emerging and established leaders with the tools, connections, and vision to drive meaningful change in our community. Participants gain invaluable insight into local business and civic life, while building lifelong relationships that strengthen collaboration, innovation, and growth. This impact extends far beyond the classroom, igniting a spark of inspiration to lead passionately with purpose.” “This program is beneficial regardless of where you are on your journey and certainly recommended for those who want to challenge themselves and their communities to be better tomorrow.” Providing a similar perspective, Evan Mitchell, Class of 2026 Co-President, added: “Every phase of this program, from the first icebreaker to the final community project, teaches something essential about leadership. You’re not just learning how to lead; you’re learning why leadership matters and reflecting on who it serves in your workplace and your community. That’s what makes this program so enriching. If you’re looking to grow, to expand your perspective, and build real connections that endure long after the program concludes—connections that inspire lasting change within your community, this is where you start.” Graduates of the Class of 2027 will complete their own community service project over the course of the program prior to a formal summer commencement.
