The City of New London awarded Thames Valley Council for Community Action (TVCCA) $15,000 for its Meals on Wheels program and $2,500 for its Senior Volunteer program through its Community Development Block Grant program. Overseen by New London’s Office of Development and Planning, the CDBG program provides funds that benefit low- and moderate-income people in the New London area. “New London’s CDBG funds are a vital component of TVCCA’s nutrition programs,” said Eugene Theroux, TVCCA’s Director of Senior Resources. The program expects to provide homedelivered meals and congregate meals at four senior housing complexes to over 290 New London seniors this year. “Aside from ensuring seniors’ food security and connecting them to services that enable them to age in place at home, we also provide wellness checks and assistance with daily living activities,” said Mr. Theroux. Many Meals on Wheels volunteer drivers are supported by TVCCA’s Senior Volunteer (RSVP) program, an additional recipient of CDBG funds. Director Gina King notes “We have the greatest group of volunteers. Not only do they assist with Meals on Wheels deliveries, they provide nonemergency medical rides for elderly and disabled residents, and help with other tasks, including picking up prescriptions, accompanying residents to the library, bank, shopping, and many times just offering reassurance over the phone.” RSVP also operates seven Veterans’ Coffeehouses, offering older City veterans the opportunity to rekindle the camaraderie of their service days and keep up-to-date on benefits they have earned and services for which they are eligible.
