Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts on the UConn Storrs Campus will celebrate its 70th anniversary season with a schedule of entertainment from chamber music, jazz, classical music, and rock ‘n’ roll to contemporary dance and Disney’s Moana Sing-Along-Film Concert. The season will open on Thursday, September 18, in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, with a Tribute to Buena Vista Social Club featuring Jorge Luis Pacheco, winner of the Montreux Jazz Piano Solo Competition who is redefining Cuban music while celebrating its rich musical traditions. The Lenard Chamber Music Series will include performances by Hungarian pianist Valentin Magyar (9/23). violinist Ray Chen (10/17) Phaeton Piano Trio (11/11), and Les Arts Florissants featuring violinist Théotime Langlois de Swarte (11/20). Special performances will include Jacob Collier (10/18), described as “the colorful Mozart of Gen Z,” the contemporary dance of Compagnie Hervé Koubi: Sol Invictus (10/23) and the annual Holiday Pops concert (12/6) by Boston Pops, led by conductor Keith Lockhart, who is beginning his 30th season with the Pops. Legacies of three Rock and Roll Hall of Famers will be celebrated with INVINCIBLE: A Glorious Tribute to Michael Jackson, Rainee Blake’s Take Me As I Am: A Joni Mitchell Tribute and ZOSO: The Ultimate Led Zeppelin Experience. The rock celebration will also include the exhibition “Eight Days A Week: An Illustrated Record of Rock ‘n’ Roll” in the Jorgensen Gallery (Sep 27 – Dec 6). The exhibition highlights posters, album covers and photographs by Connecticut photographer Joseph Sia along with promotional materials from the archive of editor, journalist and radio disc jockey Ken Best from his writing about music for newspapers in New Jersey and Connecticut. “This year’s schedule of performances is as wide-ranging as we’ve presented in our 70 years in existence on the Storrs campus,” said Rodney Rock, longtime Jorgensen Director. “We are especially happy that our beautiful new Steinway Model D Concert Grand Piano will be prominently showcased in a number of performances throughout the 25-26 season.” Tickets for Jacob Collier (Oct 18) are on sale now.
