Waterford Country School Appoints Elise Johansen as Chief Executive Officer

People Business

Waterford Country School (WCS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Elise Johansen as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective June 29.

Elise brings more than 20 years of nonprofit leadership experience serving children, youth, and families facing challenges including trauma, violence, disability, poverty, and various systems involvement. She has a strong history of advocating for strong safety net services and robust community supports. Throughout her career, she has led a diverse portfolio of programs (often with the human-animal bond embedded) spanning residential services, education initiatives, healthcare partnerships, and crisis response, all with a commitment to helping individuals and communities thrive.

"We are thrilled to welcome Elise to Waterford Country School," said Ray Currier, Chair of the Board of Trustees. "Her extensive leadership experience, passion for serving children and families, and commitment to collaboration make her the ideal person to lead WCS into its next chapter."

Recognized for her collaborative leadership style, Johansen has built strong partnerships across organizations and communities while leading with compassion, purpose, and strategic vision. She has a proven track record of expanding programs, securing critical funding, and developing innovative services that improve outcomes for children and families.

"I am honored to join Waterford Country School and look forward to working alongside the dedicated staff, board members, community partners, and supporters who make the agency’s mission possible," said Elise. "Together, we will continue building on WCS's strong foundation while expanding opportunities to support children, families, and our community."

Elise is equally passionate about building meaningful connections outside of her professional life. She and her wife, together for more than 17 years, share their home with four rescue dogs—Sigi, Ginsburg, Otter, and Rico. An avid lover of nature, animals, and the outdoors, she also enjoys reading, exploring the arts, discovering local restaurants, thrifting, listening to music, and spending time with family and friends.

As Waterford Country School welcomes Johansen, the organization looks forward to the experience, energy, and vision she brings as CEO and to continuing its mission of providing life-changing services for children and families throughout southeastern Connecticut.
