Call for Artists with Parkinson's Disease

Call for Artists: The Art of Movement

Mystic, CT — Hartford HealthCare's Chase Family Movement Disorders Center will host "The Art of Movement," an exhibit of creative works by people living with Parkinson's Disease, in May in its new Mystic location. The exhibit is seeking works by people who have Parkinson's.

The exhibit is seeking all types of creative works, including painting, sculpting, creative writing, dance, photography, music, quilting and other crafts.

Interested artists should contact Susan Lather at the Chase Family Movement Disorders Center: 860-696-5503 or susan.lather@hhchealth.org

The exhibit will be open to the public Saturday, May 9, from 1-3 p.m., at Hartford HealthCare Mystic, 100 Perkins Farm Drive, Mystic. Artists will be able to display and offer their work for sale to benefit the Chase Center.

In addition to the displays, there will be remarks by Drs. J. Antonelle de Marcaida, Medical Director, Chase Family Movement Disorders Center; Marisa Moro-de-Casillas, and Elena Bortan. Poet Jean Gustafson will read some of her work, and painter Melissa Barbieri will talk about her Parkinson’s journey and how her art and her family have kept her strong.

The idea of having the exhibit grew out of Dr. DeMarcaida's long fascination with and appreciation of the creativity of her patients.

Drs. Bortan and Moro-de-Casillas will staff the Chase Family Movement Disorders Center in the Mystic building, joined by a full complement of staff including advanced practitioners, a neuropsychologist, social worker, nurses, medical assistants, patient service coordinators and practice manager.

The Wellness programs at the Chase Family Movement Disorders Center are offered free of charge for patients with Parkinson’s disease. Exercise can be disease-modifying for people with Parkinson’s. Donations support the Boxing, Tai Chi, Yoga and additional classes offered in the Vernon, Cheshire and Mystic facilities.
