Eastern Connecticut businesses, non-profits, and municipalities are encouraged to develop marketing plans, which could then be funded by the program if approved. Plans should focus on marketing eastern Connecticut’s tourism economy and encourage the safe enjoyment of Connecticut’s tourism opportunities UConn Avery Point celebrated the opening of its Husky Harvest food pantry on Wednesday,January 18th, one of four pantries to go online at each of UConn’s regional campuses.

(November 29, 2022) – Thames Valley Council for Community Action (TVCCA) is proud to announce that it will be participating in the 2021 Subaru Share the Love Event as a member of Meals on Wheels America – one of four national Share the Love charitable partners supported through the campaign. From November 17, 2022, through January 3, 2023, Subaru of America will ALICE Saves, a program of Connecticut United Ways, helps working families kick start their savings and get on a path to financial security. It combines two award-winning programs, SaverLife and TrustPlus.
ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. In New London County, 23% of households are ALICE, meaning they are working but still cannot make ends meet. Another 10% of households are living below the poverty line.

Amy led Independent Living residents through a program about living organisms from Long Island Sound. Residents got up close and personal with a variety of organisms such as crabs and lobsters. They made predictions and observations about how the animals move, eat, and survive in our local waters. Amy presented on

Dinner in the Dark is the major annual fundraiser for Hope in Focus, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Ledyard-based organization dedicated to providing information and support to individuals and families affected by Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA), a rare inherited retinal disease that causes blindness. Mohegan Sun and the community will come together on Friday, November 11th for a day that both honors and provides invaluable resources to veterans and active-duty military members.Vets Rock at Mohegan Sun will host a job fair, veteran service organizations and other resources. Veterans and active-duty military members can pre-register for this year’s event through the website. Pre-registration for Save-A-Suit is also available for veterans and active-duty military.
Save-A-Suit has been a partner of Vets Last winter, there were 1,461 calls to United Way 2-1-1 from New London County for home heating assistance. United Way's Project Warm-up is a last resort for local families struggling to make ends meet who do not qualify for other assistance programs. It is intended to meet one-time, emergency situations.
United Way of Southeastern Connecticut works with town social service agencies, and they determine if their clients experiencing a short-term crisis are candidates to receive Project Warm-up assistance. Governor Ned Lamont today announced that the Connecticut Department of Social Services (DSS) will implement new eligibility benefit levels in the state’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) beginning October 1, 2022, that will result in an estimated 44,000 additional Connecticut residents in 17,600 households becoming eligible for the food assistance program.
Additionally, current enrollees will receive more than a 12% increase in their monthly benefits from the program’s annual cost-of-living The Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut awarded $1,036,680 in scholarships to 323 students from across the region this year. Recipients come from 36 of the 42 towns in the Foundation’s service area.

Vilsack that New London and Windham counties have been designed by the federal agency as primary natural disaster areas due to the recent drought. Additionally, Hartford, Middlesex, and Tolland counties have been designated as contiguous counties under the declaration. The designation makes farm operators in primary counties and those counties contiguous to such primary counties eligible to be The Overdose Action Team/NLC CARES Team will join people around the world in observing International Overdose Awareness Day on Wednesday, August 31. This year, the NLC CARES Team will travel throughout the region to hold a series of ‘pop-up’ events designed to raise awareness of the overdose epidemic and to encourage everyone in the community to be part of the effort to save lives. Community members are welcome to come to one or more of the events to learn about overdose and receive a free Connecticut Regulators gave permission to Eversource to shut off electricity and gas to customers with financial or medical hardships. The Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) will allow shut-offs beginning May 2, 2023. Customers participating in a payment plan program may be protected from service disconnections.

For Homeschoolers 14 to 18 years old, learn drawing and design techniques for screen printing to print on paper and a T-shirt. Pare College Scholarship.Sofia DaSilva of East Providence, RI, and Aimee Girard of Waterford, CT, each will receive $5,000 towards their college education from the Centreville Bank Charitable Foundation.
Over the course of 55 years, Robert O. Pare served Centreville Bank in a variety of roles, including president, trustee and corporator. Centreville Bank’s board of directors established the scholarship in 2018 On July 26, 2022, The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT Foundation granted a $2,000 scholarship to a high school graduate in the region. The scholarship program focuses on students who plan to continue to contribute to Eastern CT through their future work.

Three area women joined the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center’s Board of Trustees on October 14 at the nonprofit’s annual meeting.
Rebecca M. Nolan, Jennifer Herbst and Claudia Bachmann-Bouchard join the board, which oversees the operation of the center. They will each serve a three-year term.
Nolan is a landscape architect who grew up in Mystic, and returned to the area in 2017. She lives in Pawcatuck. She is Associate Director of Strategic Partnerships at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) where TVCCA’s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is conducting its 25th Annual Winter Boot Drive to provide children in the region with a pair of warm winter boots in time for the holidays. The event honors the memory of Gordon Keller, a local triathlete who lost his life in a tragic accident while on a training ride. Eric Galvin has been named Chair of United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut’s 2019 Community Campaign.
Galvin is President of ConnectiCare, with more than 20 years of experience in the health care industry. In his new role as Chair, he’ll serve on United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut’s Board of Directors.

Coast Guard is coming off its most successful season in over a decade as the Bears finished 7-3 overall and tied for second in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) with a 5-2 record. It was the most wins for the Bears since the team went 8-2 in 2007. U.S. Coast Guard LTJG Nikole Barnes has teamed with Lara Dallman-Weiss to chase the dream of qualifying for the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan.
Barnes and Dallman-Weiss, Team Perfect Vision Sailing, will next compete August 17-22 in Enoshima Yacht Harbor in Japan, which is the host venue for the 2020 Olympic Games.
The duo qualified in the Women's 470 by finishing 20th out of a 45 boat fleet at the Trofeo Princesa Sofia Iberostar regatta in Spain in April. Last week, students from West Woods Upper Elementary School and Bike Friendly Farmington celebrated Bike to School Day with a ride along the Farmington Trail.

Note: this article was originally published on May 14, 2019 by The Day.New London, CT – The nonprofit Veterans Equine Therapeutic Services is partnering with RD86 Space to pilot an educational program called the Cowboy Kitchen that trains local veterans interested in culinary arts.
Veterans will pair up with local chefs to execute five events this summer at the Horses Healing Humans Farm in North Stonington. Vets will learn a variety of skills allowing them to support this program, which brings exposure Reliance Health announced this week that their Board of Directors has appointed Carrie Dyer as Chief Executive Officer upon current CEO, David Burnett’s retirement. Burnett, who has been the organization’s CEO for nearly 41 years, announce plans to retire by the end of 2019 in a press release last month.
Dyer, who has worked for the agency since 1994, has served as Reliance Health’s Chief Operating Officer for the past 12 years. “For some time now, Carrie has had more ability than I to handle the NESS Recognizes Young Artists from Across CTStonington, CT – New England Science & Sailing Foundation (NESS) announced this year’s winning artists for the statewide calendar drawing contest entitled “Long Island Sound and Its Watershed: What It Means to Me.” The annual drawing contest is open to all Connecticut students currently in Grades K-6. NESS’s The women's 800 freestyle relay broke the school record and become the first women's relay in program history to earn All-America honors while Chasse Sodemann earned All-America honors in the 100 breaststroke for the second time in his career to lead Coast Guard during the third day of the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships.

Greensboro, NC – Joe Rodriguez broke the school record in the 50 freestyle and earned a pair of All-America honors to highlight the first day of the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships.
Rodriguez placed third in the 50 freestyle with a school record time of 19.88 and was part of the 200 medley relay team with Patrick Jackson, Chasse Sodemann and Tyler Dominick which finished in eighth with a time of 1:29.98 to earn All-America honors.
It was the first two All-America honors AJ AeberliRoanoke, VA – U.S. Coast Guard Academy Junior AJ Aeberli earned All-America honors with a sixth place finish at 174 pounds at the Division III Wrestling Championship.
Aeberli, the fifth seed at 174, was appearing in his second straight NCAA Championship. He went 2-1 on March 8 to assure himself a top eight finish and the first All-America honors of his career.

Boston, MA – Sophomore Josiah Davis placed eighth in the 800 meters to earn All-America honors at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship at the Reggie Lewis Center.
Davis, making his NCAA Championship debut placed third his heat with time if 1:53.32 to earn a spot in the today's final where he ran a 1:54.80 to become an All-American.

The 200 freestyle relay of sophomore Dan Jenkins, Rodriguez, Dominick and junior John Pompay had the Trailing by two points with less than a minute remaining, the University of Connecticut Avery Point women’s basketball team scored seven straight points on its way to a thrilling 84-82 win over No. 2 nationally ranked Massasoit CC in the Region XXI Tournament final on March 3.
With the win, the Pointers advance to the NJCAA Division III National Tournament for the second straight year.
