Mitchell College recently welcomed Dr. Marilyn Sutton-Haywood as its Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs. Sutton-Haywood takes over the position from Dr. Catherine Wright, who retired in late December after a 40-year career at the college.
Sutton-Haywood will oversee several divisions of the college, including academics, student life, Living and Learning programs – including Thames at Mitchell, the Bentsen Learning Center and the Mystic Program – and the Children’s Learning Center. She most Dr. Tracy Y. Espy, president of Mitchell College, was recently profiled in Women in Higher Education, a publication for practitioners in the field, dedicated to issues affecting women working in higher education.

Rebecca M. Nolan, Jennifer Herbst and Claudia Bachmann-Bouchard join the board, which oversees the operation of the center. They will each serve a three-year term.
Nolan is a landscape architect who grew up in Mystic, and returned to the area in 2017. She lives in Pawcatuck. She is Associate Director of Strategic Partnerships at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) where TVCCA’s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is conducting its 25th Annual Winter Boot Drive to provide children in the region with a pair of warm winter boots in time for the holidays. NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Coast Guard Academy women's indoor track and field team has cracked the Top 10 in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) Division III national poll as the Bears checked in at number 10.
The Bears, were 15th in the preseason poll before moving up five spots this week. Coast Guard is one of three New England teams in the Top 10 as Williams is first and MIT is Local non-profit organizations are invited to apply for Pfizer Connecticut Laboratories 2020/2021 competitive grants. Applications from organizations serving communities in Southeastern Connecticut, the greater New Haven area, and southern Rhode Island will be considered. Priority will be given to programs that bring STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) to students from elementary through high school. All On Saturday, September 14th, over 150 riders participated in the 2nd Annual ConnectiCare Gran Fondo. The event honors the memory of Gordon Keller, a local triathlete who lost his life in a tragic accident while on a training ride. Eric Galvin has been named Chair of United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut’s 2019 Community Campaign.
Galvin is President of ConnectiCare, with more than 20 years of experience in the health care industry. In his new role as Chair, he’ll serve on United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut’s Board of Directors.

Coast Guard is coming off its most successful season in over a decade as the Bears finished 7-3 overall and tied for second in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) with a 5-2 record. It was the most wins for the Bears since the team went 8-2 in 2007. U.S. Coast Guard LTJG Nikole Barnes has teamed with Lara Dallman-Weiss to chase the dream of qualifying for the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan.
Barnes and Dallman-Weiss, Team Perfect Vision Sailing, will next compete August 17-22 in Enoshima Yacht Harbor in Japan, which is the host venue for the 2020 Olympic Games.
The duo qualified in the Women's 470 by finishing 20th out of a 45 boat fleet at the Trofeo Princesa Sofia Iberostar regatta in Spain in April. The duo placed 15,16 and 25 The Coast Guard Academy Athletics Division has named Richelle Johnson the Academy's first NCAA Inclusion and Diversity Designee.
Johnson is a civilian staff member within the Office of Inclusion and Diversity, who has partnered with Athletics on several diversity initiatives. In her new position she will be charged with serving as the primary contact and conduit for diversity and inclusion-related information.

Last week, students from West Woods Upper Elementary School and Bike Friendly Farmington celebrated Bike to School Day with a ride along the Farmington Trail.

Veterans will pair up with local chefs to execute five events this summer at the Horses Healing Humans Farm in North Stonington. Vets will learn a variety of skills allowing them to support this program, which brings exposure Reliance Health announced this week that their Board of Directors has appointed Carrie Dyer as Chief Executive Officer upon current CEO, David Burnett’s retirement. Burnett, who has been the organization’s CEO for nearly 41 years, announce plans to retire by the end of 2019 in a press release last month.

Greensboro, NC – Joe Rodriguez broke the school record in the 50 freestyle and earned a pair of All-America honors to highlight the first day of the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships.
Rodriguez placed third in the 50 freestyle with a school record time of 19.88 and was part of the 200 medley relay team with Patrick Jackson, Chasse Sodemann and Tyler Dominick which finished in eighth with a time of 1:29.98 to earn All-America honors.
It was the first two All-America honors AJ AeberliRoanoke, VA – U.S. Coast Guard Academy Junior AJ Aeberli earned All-America honors with a sixth place finish at 174 pounds at the Division III Wrestling Championship.
