Lyman Allyn Art Museum Installs Temporary Additions to American Perspectives Gallery

The Lyman Allyn Art Museum is pleased to announce that two large-scale portraits by Barkley L. Hendricks, recently on view in the Museum’s exhibition Barkley L. Hendricks in New London, have been reinstalled in the Museum’s American Perspectives gallery where they will remain on exhibition until May 2024.

Brenda P., 1974, and North Philly Niggah (William Corbett), 1975, both oil on canvas, were featured in the Museum’s exhibition Barkley L. Hendricks in New London, which celebrated Hendricks’ artistic legacy, focusing on issues of place, teaching, and community in his career.

Hendricks taught studio art at Connecticut College from 1972 until 2010 and lived in New London until his death in 2017. In that time, Hendricks rose to national and international artistic prominence, best known for his large-scale painted portraits such as these

Brenda P. portrays former New London resident Brenda Perry, whose family was friends with the artist. Both portraits on view are on extended loan from the Art Bridges Foundation. Alice Walton, of the Walton Family Foundation, created Art Bridges in 2017, which is dedicated to expanding access to American Art through many innovative initiatives, including loans from their important collection and supporting educational programs in collaboration with museums across America.

Visitors are now able to view these striking portraits for the next eight months in the 20th century gallery next to other notable works by artists such as Sol LeWitt, Kazuya Sakai, and Freddie Styles.
