United Way of Southeastern Connecticut held its first-ever gala benefit event to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center. United for Gemma honored the evolution of the Food Center from 1988 to present-day, as well as founder Gemma Moran, who passed away earlier this year.
The annual Gemma E. Moran Award for Inspiration was presented to James Newman, a member of United Way’s Board of Directors and the MDA-UAW Local 571.

Over 230 regional representatives maxed out the meeting space at The Spa at Norwich Inn, demonstrating the breadth and importance of the Chamber’s work. Official business included Board elections, finance updates, and a report from our Foundation. The Chamber welcomed 17 new Trustees to its Groton, CT – Over 250 area high school students and teachers convened in the Crozier Williams Student Center at Connecticut College on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 for the 13th Annual Money Madness seminar presented by Chelsea Groton Bank. Nine area schools participated in the day: Academy of the Holy Family, Griswold Alternative School, Ledyard High School, Lyman Memorial High School, Marine Science Magnet High School, Montville High School, Norwich Free Academy, Wheeler High School and Waterford High Norwich, CT – After a multi-year process, Three Rivers has completed an LED lighting upgrade throughout the campus and was awarded $95,018 by Norwich Public Utilities (NPU) through their Lighting Retrofit Program. Chris LaRose, Operations Manager of Norwich Public Utilities, presented the check to Mary Ellen Jukoski, President of Three Rivers Community College.
The cost of the lighting upgrade was $271,480 and, with the NPU’s $95,018 rebate, 35% of the cost was covered. With the new energy efficient Norwich, CT ̶ Proud families of Three Rivers Community College students packed the room on Wednesday, May 2, when the Three Rivers College Foundation (TRCF) held the twenty-sixth annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony.
Generous contributions led to a record-breaking number of scholarships awarded to 212 students. The total sponsorships awarded came to just over $410,000 which includes $50,000 of summer scholarships. The companies’ participation in the 2017 Connecticut Neighborhood Assistance Act’s tax credit program made it possible for The Arc NLC to upgrade an aging electric heating system at a home in Groton
After Hurricane Irma barreled into Florida, leaving more than 7.4 million people without power, local utilities companies like Eversource Energy and Norwich Public Utilities (NPU) stepped up to help get the lights backs on. They know the devastation and destruction superstorms leave behind, and put their skills to use to help communities in need.
A loss of power in Florida can be life-threatening, especially during the summer when heat stroke can pose a serious threat to those without air United Way of Southeastern Connecticut hosted its Campaign Celebration event to recognize local businesses and organizations that ran outstanding fundraising campaigns and volunteer year-round on behalf of United Way. Those in attendance were also among the first to learn how much had been raised during the organization’s annual fundraising campaign. More than 320 community leaders and volunteers gathered at Foxwoods Resort Casino to celebrate the achievement.
