NEW LONDON, CT -- Thames River Heritage Park announced the creation of a new program to support the heritage sites along the Thames. Modeled after the successful Portland (Maine) History Docent (PHD) training program, the inaugural Thames River Heritage Park Docent Academy – a 10-week training program for current and prospective volunteer guides – will begin on Thursday, March 10, 2022 and meeting every Thursday morning from 9 AM – 12 PM.

We have a full season of events that include a Sea to Table series, Groton Bank Day, Plein Air Painting, a Garden Workshop, a Garden Fairy Tea and a Politics & Fashion lecture.
Our first major event, Sea to Table, is a four-part series focused on Sea Scalloping. It’s the return of the Florence Griswold Museum’s highly anticipated annual outdoor exhibition, Wee Faerie Village. This year the family-friendly walking trail highlights thirty-one faerie-sized places handcrafted by artists, designers, and faerie-aficionados. Last year over 15,000 visitors enjoyed the month-long event.
Old Lyme, CT – The Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme, CT The Avery-Copp House will host an illustrated lecture on lace making and conservation by textile conservator Susan J. Jerome, Saturday February 25, 1 PM at 154 Thames Street in Groton, CT.
The program will focus on the history of handmade lace and the development of the machine-made lace industry. It will include the identification of laces, using images from the Mabel Foster Bainbridge Lace Collection, housed at the University of Rhode Island. Ms Jerome will also cover how to properly care for and If you send or receive flowers on Valentine’s Day, you might want to attend the Victorian Valentine Workshop, Sunday, February 5 at 1 PM at the Avery-Copp House. Learn the subtle meaning a certain arrangement of blooms might express, enjoy tea and sweets and make a Victorian Valentine to take The Ghost of Christmas Past and other scary figments of Ebenezer Scrooge’s haunted imagination come alive in Jennifer Emerson’s dramatic reading of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, December 16 and 17 at 6 PM in the parlor of the historic Avery-Copp House, 154 Thames Street in Groton, CT.
Historic interpreter and Dickens devotee, Emerson has returned every December since 2011 to share her love of this classic tale with rapt audiences of all ages.

Located at 154 Thames Street in Groton, the house will be decked in its traditional Yuletide finery, including a table laden with Christmas cookies and refreshments. Costumed docents will welcome guests and answer questions, and guests may take a self-guided tour to explore the house at their own Avery-Copp House Museum Director Leslie Evans will offer the second part of the program on Herbs for Hearth and Health Sunday, November 13 from 2 PM to 4 PM. The program will be held in the historic kitchen of the Avery-Copp House at 154 Thames St. in Groton, and will include how to make seasonal skin care products and a traditional remedy for coughs and colds. Participants will be able to take their handcrafts home. Ingredients, recipes and a list of resources will be provided. Museum Director Leslie Evans will teach a class on “Herbs for Hearth and Health,” August 6, from 4 PM to 6 PM. Evans’ experience includes the design and planting of the herb and heirloom vegetable gardens at the Nathan Hale Homestead in Coventry. She has lectured extensively on the topics of domestic life in 18th & 19th century New England, The public is invited to sample craft beers and cider and join in the chorus led by Mystic Seaport Chantey Foreman Geoff Kaufman, June 25, from 5 PM to 7 PM at the Avery-Copp House riverfront property, 154 Thames St. in Groton, CT.

Geoff Kaufman is a museum educator known for his mastery of 19th Century sailors’ work The seventh annual GardenFest at the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme is a ten day celebration of the site’s historic gardens, featuring special events, displays, demonstrations, and family activities. From June 3 through 12, visitors can enjoy a wide variety of activities for all ages and interests. Most events are included with Museum admission. Children 12 and under are always free.
