Delegation from Victoria, Australia meets with area business, education leaders at the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut/Regional Innovation Center Group tour region under AUKUS maritime security partnership
(NEW LONDON, CT, July 18, 2024) – A delegation from the Australian state of Victoria toured the region on Wednesday as part of their visit through the tri-nation security partnership between the U.S., United Kingdom, and Australia known as AUKUS.
AUKUS is intended to build business and Eastern CT – The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT Foundation recently awarded 51 grants to support programs that address education, economic development, food insecurity, and essential needs throughout the regions of New London and Windham counties.
The mission of the Foundation, a 501(c)3 overseen by a volunteer board with support from the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT, is to enhance and enrich education and economic opportunities, especially for children and families, in the Chamber’s service area. Students from eight high schools – Academy of the Holy Family, Bacon Academy, Lyman Memorial High School, Norwich Free Academy, Montville High School, RHAM High School, Waterford High School, and Wheeler High School – convened in the Crozier Williams Student Center at Connecticut College on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 for the 18th Annual Money Madness seminar presented by Chelsea Groton Bank.
The half-day seminar opened with keynote speaker, Rachel Lenda, Director of Tourism for the State of CT. Three area women joined the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center’s Board of Trustees on October 14 at the nonprofit’s annual meeting.
Rebecca M. Nolan, Jennifer Herbst and Claudia Bachmann-Bouchard join the board, which oversees the operation of the center. They will each serve a three-year term.

When Tony Sheridan immigrated to New London from County Meath, Ireland back in 1964, one of his first jobs was as a plumber. His reasoning, he says, was simple.

An estimated 2,000 workers are expected to arrive in eastern Connecticut this year to begin new jobs at Electric Boat.
To welcome these and other potential newcomers to the area, the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut is working with partners from the cities of New London and Groton, additional stakeholders, and the Thames River Innovation Place to create an economic initiative called Community Concierge.
The new program will assist employers in the recruitment, relocation, and retention of Waterford, CT – Charter Oak Federal Credit Union awarded $96,000 in college scholarships, the largest disbursement in the credit union’s history, during a private reception at its headquarters on Tuesday, May 30, 2017.
“Nearly $270,000 has been awarded over the past three years, benefitting over 130 students in eastern Connecticut,” said Brian A. Orenstein, Charter Oak’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “Our scholarship program has alleviated some of the financial burden associated with pursuing a Pfizer’s Groton Laboratories will support 67 programs in Southeastern Connecticut, the greater New Haven area, and southern Rhode Island through its 2017 competitive grants program.
Priority was given to programs that bring science and math to students from elementary through high school. Additional awards were made for programs that provide for the underserved or to support local civic and cultural institutions.

After 40 years in the legal and consulting field, Jay Levin was considering what to do with the next phase of his life. While discussing the matter with Attorney Jeff Hill, a shareholder and director of Suisman Shapiro, Hill suggested that Levin should join the firm.
Levin says he knew two of Suisman Shapiro’s founding attorneys, Max Shapiro and Louis Wool, and appreciated the work of their firm.
