The Electric Boat Employees’ Community Services Association awarded two grants to Thames Valley Council for Community Action (TVCCA) for programs supporting people in need. A $9,000 award will support Home Again, the agency’s housing program aimed at preventing homelessness and diverting at-risk households from entry into the shelter system. TVCCA’s Senior Nutrition/Meals on Wheels program received $7,000 to help defray costs of meal delivery as well as food service at congregate meal sites at area Senior The Thames Valley Council for Community Action (TVCCA) was awarded $5,000 from the James P. & Mary E. Shea Perpetual Trust, Bank of America, N.A., Trustee, to support meal services addressing the unique nutritional and social needs of New London’s seniors. The program delivers Meals on Wheels, along with wellness checks, to homebound seniors. For active elders the program serves congregate lunches daily at the Broad Street Senior Center, and monthly to residents at four senior housing sites.

Offshore wind energy development group Ørsted announced that Thames Valley Council for Community Action will be receiving $1million as part of Ørsted’s commitment to provide ratepayer assistance, weatherization upgrades, and additional support for underserved communities, should its offshore wind project be elected to move forward.

Secor Subaru of New London presented the Thames Valley Council for Community Action (TVCCA) with a check for $20,000 for its Meals on Wheels program on March 22 as part of Subaru’s yearly Share the Love fundraising event to benefit local charities. The reception and ceremony, hosted at the Garde Arts Center in New London in conjunction with the Breezeline Winter Cinema Series’ final movie event, drew a crowd of over 200 who attended the on-stage check presentation prior to the film.

Thames Valley Council for Community Action (TVCCA) is proud to announce that it will be participating in the 2020 Subaru Share the Love Event as a member of Meals on Wheels America – one of four national Share the Love charitable partners supported through the campaign. From November 19, 2020, through January 4, 2021, Subaru of America will donate $250 for every new Subaru TVCCA’s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is conducting its 25th Annual Winter Boot Drive to provide children in the region with a pair of warm winter boots in time for the holidays. Thanks to donors, last year, we delivered boots to 1,100 low-income children ranging from preschool through elementary school.
Requests for boots from schools, childcare centers, and town social service departments grow every year. Thanks to your support, we have been able to meet those requests and are counting on Thames Valley Council for Community Action (TVCCA) has partnered with Franco’s Comedy for Your Cause and the Greater Norwich Area Chamber of Commerce (GNACC) to host a virtual comedy fundraiser on Saturday, May 16, 2020 at 7:00 pm. The event will raise money for TVCCA’s Meals on Wheels program, which has seen a dramatic increase in requests for services that include nutritious meals and wellness checks for homebound seniors. TVCCA (Thames Valley Council for Community Action) will be taking part in #GiveFromHomeDay on April 21, 2020. This national fundraising drive puts the power of giving into the hands of Americans who are anxious to help neighbors and strangers alike who struggle with the economic and health impacts of the new coronavirus (COVID-19).
With people out of work, small businesses closed, schools shut down, and seniors more isolated than ever, the concept of helping our neighbors and communities has been TVCCA remains open to provide the critical human services needed by our community, especially during difficult times like these.
In consideration of both our staff and clients’ health and well-being due to COVID-19, the decision was made to close our office buildings to the public in Norwich and New London effective March 17, 2020. The office staff are working and providing services through various means of technology. Many of the programs, like heating assistance, have received guidance from our funders TVCCA’s RSVP Veterans’ Coffeehouse is partnering with the Montville Senior Center to add a new gathering place for local veterans. The first meeting will be held Wednesday, March 11 from 9am to 11am. The Coffeehouse is scheduled to meet on the second Wednesday of each month. The Veterans’ Coffeehouse is a comfortable location for ALL veterans and their spouses to socialize and receive information regarding veterans’ benefits and services.

Last year, almost 1,500 low-income children throughout eastern Connecticut received warm winter boots for the holidays! We are presently looking for donors to help us meet our requests for new winter boots.
