New London (Sept. 7, 2022) – The Garde Arts Center is pleased to announce that Connecticut-based novelist Wally Lamb will host screenings of the entire six-episode HBO series, I Know This Much Is True, over three nights from September 21 to 23, 2022 at 7 p.m. on the Garde’s giant movie screen. A collaborative effort by Thames River Heritage Park Foundation and The Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra (ECSO) today [Jan. 13] announced the postponement of “Symphonic Fantasy,” the evening performance originally scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 22, 2022, at New London’s Garde Arts Center, due to the current high rate of COVID-19 transmission. A new date has not been determined.

The Foundation recently approved $405,820 in grants to 68 non-profit organizations from Connecticut and Rhode Island, which put the full year’s giving total above the $1 million mark for the first time ever. Just today we received word that the State of Connecticut will be giving the Garde a matching grant of $182,800 for the more than $350,000 that was raised from the community in the last six weeks! The 2019-2020 season continues with an exciting program that features a Grammy Award winner and timeless compositions. Edward Elgar’s concert overture In the South opens the program with a boisterous theme re-purposed from another work, that joyfully expresses his experiences with his family in Italy. The soloist for the evening is Grammy-winning guitarist Jason Vieaux. Vieaux performs Joaquín Rodrigo’s well known Concierto de Aranjuez.
“Perhaps the most precise and soulful classical guitarist of his Leap into your seat for this Leap Day concert featuring works by Mozart, Beethoven, and pieces and performers from Turkey. Throughout his career, Music Director and Conductor, Toshiyuki Shimada has visited Turkey to conduct many of the country’s leading orchestras. These collaborations have connected Toshi with some of the country’s most gifted artists. The evening opens with the orchestra performing Esintiler (Inspirations) a work by one of Turkey’s most beloved composers Ferit Tüzün. Soloists for the Kelli O'Connor, ECSO Principal Clarinetist to perform Artie Shaw's Clarinet Concerto.
The 2020 portion of the ECSO’s 19-20 season kicks off with a non-traditional pairing: the New London Big Band on the stage for the first time with the ECSO. Continuing the celebration of Music Director & Conductor Toshiyuki Shimada’s 10th anniversary, this concert presents a slate of national and local treasures. In recognition of Black History Month, the ECSO performs Concert Overture No. 2 by composer Florence Price. The Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra kicks off the 2019-20 season on Saturday, October 26, at 7:30 PM with “New Season – New World”, at the Garde Arts Center in New London. This opening concert features violinist, Solomiya Ivakhiv making her ECSO debut with Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. The concert concludes with Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 (From the New World).

The Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra The Thames River Heritage Park will offer a special schedule for the hop-on hop-off water taxi service on Saturday, September 14 and Sunday, September 15, during the Connecticut Maritime Heritage Festival being held at Fort Trumbull and City Pier in New London.
The Water Taxi will operate continuous express water taxi service between Fort Trumbull and City Pier in New London and between Fort Trumbull and Thames River Landing in Groton from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The ECSO gathers all of the artistic forces in our community for a joyous celebration of Leonard Bernstein’s 100th anniversary with a performance of his Broadway work, Candide. Bernstein himself was quoted as saying “there’s more of me in that piece than anything else I’ve done.”
Technically a comic operetta, Candide depicts Voltaire’s satirical novel of the same name. Opposing philosophies and ideologies are sung and Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra (ECSO) and Chorus announces a vacancy for the contractual position of Music Director/Conductor of the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Chorus (ECSC). The start date for this position will be July 2018. Highly qualified, experienced, choral conductors may apply. Interested candidates must submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, rehearsal and concert videos, three letters of recommendations, and a sample choral program for a holiday concert with a chamber orchestra, and a Speed PaintingThis Ease, an atmospheric work commissioned by the LA Chamber Orchestra from the accomplished composer Hannah Lash opens this February concert. Guido Garaycochea, co-founder of Expressiones Cultural Center in New London, CT, joins the ECSO as a speed painter during this work. Describing his artwork as “an abstraction of dire and lost dreams”, Guido will paint alongside the orchestra, finishing when the music ends. The Women’s Philharmonic Advocacy provides funding for This Ease.

Eastern CT – The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut has announced that William “Bill” Stanley, Vice President of Development and Community Relations for Lawrence + Memorial Hospital/Yale New Haven Health, has been selected as the 2017 recipient of the William Crawford Distinguished Service Award. He will be honored at a dinner celebration on Pfizer’s Groton Laboratories will support 67 programs in Southeastern Connecticut, the greater New Haven area, and southern Rhode Island through its 2017 competitive grants program.
Priority was given to programs that bring science and math to students from elementary through high school. Additional awards were made for programs that provide for the underserved or to support local civic and cultural institutions.

The renowned violinist and St. Louis Symphony concertmaster David Halen joins the ECSO to end the first half in a performance of one of Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra announced today that Daniel Brandl has joined the New London-based nonprofit arts organization to serve as its new Executive Coordinator. Daniel comes with a wealth of experience in music, education, and arts administration. Currently, he is the Resident Music Director of the Chestnut Street Playhouse in Norwich, CT as well as secretary of its Board of Directors where Daniel was instrumental in helping create a new arts organization after the Spirit of Broadway Theater
Winter Celebrations Concert: December 14, 2015
The Winter Concert will be held at 7pm on December 14, 2015 at Northeast Academy Elementary School in Groton. The concert will open with the String Ensemble, followed by the Youth Orchestra. Two of the Youth Orchestra musicians will be performing solos as well. Highlights will include music by Tchaikovsky, Handel, and Mozart. A suggested donation of $5.00 will be collected at the door. Shannon Stevenson, Music Director/Conductor for the Eastern Connecticut The Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra continues its 69th season on Saturday, November 21 at 8 PM with "Euro-Latin Passion", at the Garde Arts Center in New London. ECSO Music Director Toshiyuki Shimada opens up the night with a symphonic flourish of Le Carnaval Romain Overture by Hector Berlioz. Queen Elizabeth Prize silver medalist Aleksey Semenenko adds to the energy with a performance of Nicolo Paganini’s virtuosic Violin Concerto No. 1. Emmanuel Chabrier and Manuel de Falla both summon Spanish The Eastern Connecticut Symphony Chorus (ECSC) is currently seeking singers for the remainder of their 2015-2016 season, featuring Elgar’s Coronation March and Handel's coronation anthem Zadok the Priest on the stage at the Garde Arts Center in April 2016.
Auditions will be held on Wednesday, January 20, 2016, in Leamy Hall on the Coast Guard Academy campus.
The ECSC offers singers a unique opportunity to join a musical enterprise of symphonic proportion in Southeastern Connecticut. Individuals selected The Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra will open its 69th season on Saturday, October 24, at 8 PM with “A Hero’s Life” at the Garde Arts Center in New London.
ECSO Music Director Toshiyuki Shimada conducts a performance that begins with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 3. Clarinetist and guest artist David Shifrin will then join the orchestra to perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto No. 1 in A Major.
